I guys I have inherited 1978 Merc 450 SEL - problem is that it's in Poland - so how do I go about importing it to UK - car fully mote'd and registered over there on classic plates.
It's a 1978 USA Imported 2 previous owners 6.9 with 128k miles and leather interior fsh and no rust what could I achieve for it on UK market? I'm not really fan of them and would do with the money especially my inheritance came with some costs....
Any advice welcome...

Well they're not worth all that to be honest, get it imported, registered and that, and I'll do you a favour and take it off your hands for £1200 or so. smile

Drive it here and submit it for registration, which will require an inspection. The biggest cost is the petrol.

Presumably it is LHD? If so, it will be worth more in Poland where you will be able to sell it into Germany (used and youngtimer classics are generally worth more in continental Europe than they are here in the UK). A fair RHD example is worth £5k to £10k max.

I'm sure they are like 10 times that... especially that I'm talking about the 6.9l one as seen on PH few weeks back - cheapest I have seen was 4k and in bits in need of full restoration...you guys are pulling my leg here surely...

The US spec bumpers ruin it for me. How easy would it be to change them for EU spec ones?

Check values on German ebay and get it advertised there - no point bringing it here, getting it through registration and mot, then trying to flog a left hand drive, massively engined, barge to a market that probably won't touch it without right hand drive.

If nothing else you'd have to spend money on a pair of right hand drive headlights, moving the rear foglight (if it doesn't have 2) etc and you'll also need all the export/de-registration paperwork from the exporting country to confirm it's legally de-titled before it can be registered here.

Quite frankly too much ball-ache and up front cost for potentially low return. At least if you sell it on the continent nothing needs doing to it before it can be registered.

Bringing it to the UK is really simple since Poland is part of the EU. Simply drive it back, fill in the forms, then when the V5 turns up buy a set of number plates, take it for an MOT and you're done.

You'll need all of the original paperwork, possibly a heritage certificate from MB too.

If that's anything to go by, something like £15,000 as a value.

Bumpers for these are around £2k each end IIRC, they are huge double decker girders! The US cars had horrible headlights aswell, not sure if they weren't substantially detuned compared to Euro cars or would that just be California cars.

My uncle had a glorious red one of these which he reluctantly got rid of after figuring out it cost about £250 to do a round trip from London down to his house in Devon (normally a two stop affair to boot!). I don't think he took it easy but even so considering this was in the mid/late 90s I wonder what the cost of fuelling one of these bad boys is these days?!

Either way that's a heroic sized engine to enjoy, should be a lot of wafty expensive fun.

As long as it wasn't a scam email and seeing as you don't really like them then as everyone has pointed out it's not worth bringing it back compared to selling it abroad.

Would make a nice road trip, £400 in fuel plus the cost of getting it roadworthy or 1,000 mile road trip worthy.

You say this like it's a bad thing!

It would be a great adventure bringing it back to the UK - you only live once.

I raise my original offer to £1300.

Around £400 based on lots of assumptions and estimates.
