After nearly a year of BMW ownership it was time for the 123d to go in for a 60,000 mile service.

Took it in and left it with them for the day (well 5 hours) and when I picked it up was presented with a bill for £309. Now I've paid it already but upon looking through the paperwork it appears all the dealership has done is change the oil, replace brake fluid and a micro filter service so presumably not even a new one (pollen filter?).

To brake it down a bit the bill says:

- engine oil £70.63
- filter £16.50
- SLX 1ltr refill £15.58 (no idea what this is)
- microfilter service £42.08
- brake fluid change £57.50
- parts total £66.25, labour £191.46 + VAT

Presumably parts doesn't cover engine oil given that on its own is more than the stated total parts cost.

Now to me that seems slightly excessive and upon mentioning it to two mates who have BMW's (320d and a 325d) both say they have never paid above £240 for a service including a major one.

Have I just been royally screwed over?

Just realised the SLX 1ltr refill is a 1ltr bottle of oil that is now in my boot that I don't want!

Labour is the expense there, you could get the oil cheaper yourself, but obviously you went to a main dealer so don't want to.

the refill is so that you check your oil and top it up before the next service in some astronomical 10-20,000 miles. Manufacturers tend to design an engine, oil spec and service interval around the average customer needing a single 1 litre top-up between services or 2 litres if driven hard / an older engine. (at least the one I work with do and get there processes due to previous involvement with BMW/Ford)

It's what happens when you don't agree a price beforehand.

Always, phone a couple of dealers in your area and get them to price match.

Consider it a lesson learned.
