Hi.
I posted the other day about R36's. Looking for good boot space and considering performance estates, I parked up next to a blue Octavia vRS today. I liked the look of it. A young family would be easily managed in that back seat and there's plenty of room for a couple of road bikes on top.
Has anyone any thoughts on these as good buys? Have a budget of circa £15k which hopefully should secure a low ish mileage petrol. Secondly, has anyone who has owned one remapped theirs? Do Revo have a map for this VW based 2 litre turbo?
Many thanks!

Just as practical as an R36. Running costs much more sensible. Don't sound anywhere near as good.
A remapped one will out accelerate an R36 once moving too (it's a very commonly remapped engine).
The only problem with them IMO is a lack of traction at low speeds. With 4wd they would be almost perfect!

Not much more than that will get you a brand new petrol hatch (£15745 on DTD), add £850 for estate - that includes a discount for taking out Skoda finance at 7.9%, but you also get 3 years servicing if you do. The VAT-free offer is back on, so you can get a very decent deal just by walking into a dealer too. One of the most compelling reasons for ordering new is you can now spec seats without the silly white inserts for £100. Else don't pay too much secondhand - all the good deals are because it's being replaced with a MQB-based model soon.
Good cars, the boot on the hatch is almost as big as the estate so worth considering unless you need to carry dogs or wardrobes a lot. Revo, AMD, APR, Shark, etc all offer remaps.
Currently have a Fabia vRS which I've been very happy with, if I had to replace and wanted more room an Octavia would be right up there.

I'd be very surprised if any dealer who matches a DTD price will offer you the 7.9% APR and free servicing, usually you have to take the standard rate finance as the deals usually loose between £50 - £100 and the 7.9% only pays the dealership £50, where as a standard rate on Skoda Credit will probably paty atleast £500 subject to balance financed. As for the cars, great all rounders with lovely linear power and torque delivery, just 40 - 50 BHP short of the power they need, so a remap would be essential.

Many thanks for your replies! Currently driving a mapped Ti 2.4 159. Much as I love the character of the Alfa, an estate is needed and was hoping a vRS would give me a bit of performance too. Sounds like with a remap, it could be a brilliant option.

It's a good value Golf GTI with a huuuuuge boot, what's not too like? If you get a white one, folk will even get out your way, because they think it's an unmarked Police car!*

I'm astonished how many nervy BMW drivers overtake me at just 1mph more than me, nervously looking over repeatedly. Mine's black and I don't look like a copper. On topic, I've got a hatch and it's huge. Unless you're regularly moving wardrobes or you've got dogs, an estate is nice but probably unnecessary. My bike fits in with the wheels on and I could easily get a second in without dismantling it. A double mattress fits it you don't mind squishing it a little.

After what somebody else said on another forum, I tired the following, and it really does work.
I own a new Octy vRS in anthracite. Placing a reflective jacket on the passenger-side dash results in cars moving out of your way as you drive down dual-caridgeways and motorways. Vehicles also start sitting at 70mph, it is quite amusing to watch.

Fantastic...I'm loving the unmarked scenario/luminous jacket! :0)
One of the only things holding me back is the style of the 159 Ti when sparkling clean. I know I'd miss the looks...it's not perfect in other areas but I guess what is? Trying not to see a Skoda as a step backward(badge snob...not I!!)

If that's the way you want to read it then so be it. If I was driving fast, driving on people's tails, flashing for them to move over then yer, cap fits and all that. If however as an experiment, on a drive from Cambridge to Ipswich I decided to chuck a hi-vis vest into the dash I don't see how that is being a "pretend policeman". We obviously have very different definitions.

Mk2 Octavia suprisingly quick once mapped. Must have a bucket load of torque. As previously advised very poor traction when pulling away from standstill. Massive boot. Plenty of room in back for 6ft+ adults.

This thread is convincing me it's a good option...my only main request on extras is heated front seats. I saw a great value vRS estate almost new on the Skoda site in brilliant silver for under 14k. Tempted I called them today to see what they'd give me for my Alfa as a trade in and it had been sold. Not meant to be then...let's see if I can find another nice one at or around 14k. If I can secure at least 11 for mine then it's game on.

MonkeyHanger said: Just the image we need. Pretend plods As I've pointed out before on another forum: I in no way condone the pretending to be a copper thing. What I'm saying is that you don't need to pretend. Some people just behave differently if you're driving an Octavia vRS than they will if you drive other cars because they think you might be a copper. The same is true of some BMW's and Volvos. If someone can't see that I'm a podgy scruff in a t-shirt and not a copper, then I reserve the right to be amused at their lack of observation. But certainly I agree that actively trying to give the impression you're a copper is a very bad thing.

Re Octavia vRS colours. Up here in the Shire most are Race Blue, Silver or Graphite. I saw a Red one for the first time yesterday, very smart.
The wifes Fabia is Race blue and look superb, but you have got to keep it clean for the full effect.
As mentioned, the hatch is almost as big as the Estate. For me it would be the estate ever time, but it's your choice.
Good luck with your search.

Very true on the Estate. The extra space is above the parcel shelf, the actual boot is the same size. Race Blue is most common. You can now get the Octy in the Green from the Fabia line. Personally I think that is too much green, but each to their own.
