Although I don't post much here, it is the only forum I am a member and due to peoples varying degree's of successes on this site I thought I would give it a lash and ask for some advise.

Over the weekend it was one of my best mates 30th birthdays. Unfortunately, my mates dad passed away suddenly only 3 weeks ago so it was a very mixed emotion birthday and it was always going to a be a rip roaring session. Which it was.

Due to said rip roaring session I had to take two days off work due to an extreme (and I mean extreme) hangover. This all happened in an very busy time for work. I work as an Event Manager and we have our biggest event, which I am highly involved in coming up.

Long story shortened, it looks like my boss has fired me. It also looks like that my work e-mail has been de-activated, I am not getting returned calls from my boss. The last contact from him was yesterday afternoon telling me to stay away until I heard from him.

He did tell me he was done with me over me over the phone but didn't leave it as the final nail, but it does look that way.

Now, this is my dream job, its all I ever wanted to do. Its the only work experience I have in 10 years and I am only 25.

So this morning, after a few attempts to call him and another e-mail sent I am now sitting on my bed thinking what the fk am I to do now?

My boss is very tough cookie, we have become mates but that isn't making it an easier.

I was due to be paid 2 months wages on the 18th but it wouldn't surprise me if a halt has been called to that payment. This leaves me even more screwed.

The biggest part of my professional experience was with this company, it looks like any kind of reference is now up in smoke.

Now here comes the question:

Should I just appear at this event and expect to talk face to face with my boss?
Should I continue to call him?
Should I give him space?
Should I try to contact his boss and explain?

What do i do now? This is all new to me, I have never been in this situation before.

Off work twith a hangover for 2 days during a busy time? It's no wonder he's pissed off with you. Send an apology and wait to hear. If you don't hear for a month and you don't get paid then you will have to take legal steps to get your money, ACAS first.

I think that contacting his boss would be the final nail in your coffin.

I except that two days off with a hangover will not cut it but I have never experienced a hangover like this. I could barely see in front of me and didn't know where I was for a good 36hrs. I think it was more than a hangover but he isn't buying that due to knowing it was a close mates birthday.

So you went out on the lash - phoned in sick for two days?

as such your manager has sacked you for that?

i'm sure the PH lawyers will be coming in but i would go in for a visit to an employment solicitor. unless there was a track record of you doing this and you were on a final warning i dont see why he should fire you after 10 years of service.

you should've seen the hangover coming and booked that extra day off.. but i'm sure once the mods move this to J&E board it'll get better answers than what i've given.

You can't just get sacked like that anymore.
Your boss has to at least give you a written warning etc.

I suspect that as you've gone out on the piss and had days off work that you're a liability and he's given you plenty of chances already in the past.

You sound like a bit of a piss-taker if you ask me. smile

This I am aware off and it will only be an extreme last resort of begging for my job back. I really don't want to be seen as not caring about getting my job back. I will literally do anything to prove how much I want this and how sorry I actually am.

Seems a bit harsh, an instant sacking. Have you got form?

I'd stop using the term 'hangover' and start using the term 'sick'

You will have to be seen by HR to be given a disaplinary or fired so you should be clear you were not skiving but were genuinely too unwell to attend work.

hopefully this isnt something you do often...

Think you need to be honest with yourself and us. Is this the final nail in the coffin re your work performance or a total one off / aberration. If the latter then you have a reasonable chance of making things right. If not, I think you're buggered TBH.

I will be honest, I have had hangover days before but who has not? and they have never been at such an essential time.

I am not a piss taker, I work very hard and I enjoy what I do very much. It doesn't feel like work I love it that much.

He has not given me plenty of chance in the past, he has never had the option to do it.

I have also bailed this group many times before with jumping into help, unpaid because the job needs to be done.

If I was a sthead I wouldn't have come here asking for advise based on lies I have told you.

Not good having a two day hangover during a busy period, I'm no expert but there should be a procedure to follow, something like verbal warning, written warning, out the door. Unless of course it's classed as Gross Misconduct, which I guess it could be.

Either way, big mistake? Agreed.

Would not have thought blobbing was a sackable offence for a one off though.

If you dont get sacked this time, your boss will be looking to get rid of you in the near future. If I were you i would not have got smashed at the weekend and taken two days off during the busy period start looking for a new job regardless...

Learn from your mistakes and treat it as a fresh start, you are 25, its time you realised that "hangover days" are not par for the course, common or universally accepted....

If I was your boss, I would sack you. The legislation however, is on your side and you will get to ps off your boss even more by walking around in his face! So take it easy...

Some questions (avoiding the obvious, yes, it was a big mistake)

  • Are we talking about a company in the UK?
  • How long have your worked for them?
  • Are you a permanent employee or a contractor?
Advice will vary as to your next steps based on the answers to the above...
