I am currently trying to sell my Cayman S. Both the Cayman and Boxster markets seem to be flooded with very cheap cars at the minute. Has the market completely fallen due to the launch of the new models?

My car is advertised on Pistonheads, Autotrader and various other websites without any calls so far. Which would suggest it is priced too highly, however even the very cheap cars don't appear to be moving. Is anybody else selling a Cayman or sold one recently and running into the same problems?

Also, can anybody recommend traders who might be looking for stock or can provide good sale/return options?

nothing much appears to be selling privately unless its give away prices! most of the cars I've been watching thinking I'd be interested in buying still seem to be for sale even at dealers....

I'm in a similar situation, though I've had loads of interest on mine, just not from anyone with the actual cash to buy it! most people have over-priced part ex's, i.e they think they should be able to get over top book on their car and give you less than bottom book on your car LOL err.. I'm doing YOU the favor taking a p/x not the other way round wink

It's a funny market. When I first put my Cayman S up for sale (on Pistonheads) I had no interest in it at all and, like you, I figured I might have been asking too much for it, even though it was in mint condition, had low mileage, a full OPC history and a massive spec list. In the end I gave up and decided to keep hold of it a bit longer. A couple of months later I got a 997 itch that I just couldn't shake so I put it up on PH again, same ad, same price, and got three calls immediately. The first guy who came to see it bought it there and then (subject to Peter Morgan inspection that it subsequently passed with flying colours) and I only gave him £500 off the asking price.

So, in my experience, if you have a decent car, there is a buyer out there but they are few and far between. Patience is the key, unfortunately. Of course you could trade it or pass it onto a dealer but my local OPC offered me £17k for my Cayman and I sold it privately for £23,500. That's a huge difference.

What appears to have happened is similar to the 2011 reg Boxster.

The factory has shipped a job-lot of the last ones and dumped them onto the OPC network in prep for the new model.

If you look at the OPC network and look at 2009 reg cars, there are 33 997 911's for sale and 11 Caymans.

For 2012 reg there are currently 28 Caymans on the market.

I would imagine that some of the buyers will be tempted by deals OPC's will be making to shift these before the 981 Cayman arrives.

a lot of buyers go the opc route for finance and warranty etc.i tried selling my 2.5 year old cayman s last summer at a lowish price and no joy(one owner low miles etc).traded her end of year for a discounted new spyder and got nearly the same price for my cayman as if i sold privately.what i am saying is you might get more trading in than selling privately and a new car to boot albeit a discontinued model.

Sold my 987S a few months ago, full opc history, 18k miles very clean. However had to give it away to move it. Simply, new porsches depreciate at the same rate as any new Audi, BMW, Jag etc. Just to many in the market.

where are you going? might be worth taking it with you and selling it that end. I have made over $20k on my old 911 when I decide to sell. Had offers already as only a handful here.

I've been looking for a good 3.2 or 3.4 987 Boxster S for a couple of months now.

There are actually relatively few cars that have good options, good histories and are realistically priced. When they do appear they sell relatively quickly. However many of the cars available when I started looking are still for sale, with no movement in price. There are a couple of examples where the price has increased confused even though the car has been for sale for months.

The trade do appear to offer stronger money as a part exchange, as they're obviouly making a profit on the sale so can overbid on the purchase. They are less generous for a straight sale.

I think the usual rules apply. A well advertised car at an attractive price will sell quickly to a genuine buyer. If there are no calls then it's either too expensive or badly described.

To add some balance - I sold my 2008 Cayman S recently for a healthy sum, and I only listed it on Pistonheads. Was it less than I thought it was worth? Yes. But it was nearly £2k north of what my local OPC were offering me, and was a realistic price for a quick sale. It probably helped that it had the extended warranty and was generously optioned.

I think broadly speaking people need to be realistic about their prices. Caymans are not in short supply, and the new one is on the horizon. Expecting to get a couple of thousand less than you paid a year ago is woefully unrealistic.

I do tend to think however that unless your car has got the extended warranty you're going to struggle to sell privately. For only ~£2k more than what some people list theirs for privately you can go straight to an OPC and get 2 years and peace of mind of comeback against a corporate entity if things go wrong.

edit: To add context, I sold it in July of this year for just under £25k.

To add a buyer's viewpoint (or at least mine smile )

We've been thinking about one for a few months now and I regularly run through the ads. As a newcomer to Porsche, tales of engine wear and the potential bills, regardless of how common or not the issue actually is, are enough to put me off the earlier 3.4s completely. So that's a large section of the adverts/market that we simply won't consider and I'm sure others will have similar views. It doesn't matter how reliable the car has been in the past, the thought of spending £6-£8k to repair an engine on a car isn't appealing.

So we've been looking 2009/2.9 which is obviously a more expensive market. At that point the private sale has both the OPC warranty and potential scam aspects to consider so if the price from OPC is only a few £K more than the private seller asks, it's a no-brainer to get a "safe" sale.

A general problem I'm afraid. The more expensive the car the more likely the buyer is to want some assurance it's not going to be a money pit as a private sale has nothing at all to back it up (legally) so the OPC is the easiest route.

I recently bought too, like the poster above Gen 1 was discounted for perceived issues that surround them, from a personal point of view there were a set of options that I would have wanted. Then when you are at the price point of the Gen 2 you want some comfort of protection from warranty and a dealer.

In the end I settled for one from an OPC which had all the options I wanted with the exception of crested headrests but I can live without as you don't see them one you are in smile that and the balance of the 3yr warranty, as they are like a run out there was a good deal to be had.

Cayman is my 5th Porsche and in one month is my firm favourite.

It really is as simple as this. If you price it correctly and advertise it well it WILL sell.

I was in the pub only yesterday with a pal of mine who owns a performance car company. He was telling me he was struggling to buy in good stock and had sold most of his cars over the last month of so. It might be worth having a chat with him - I have no connection to the business other than meeting him regularly in the pub on Saturday lunch times!

Opposite to 997 market(trade), hardly any new or good stock coming in and cars are sitting around for ages with the prices staying the same and dealers not budging on price, the condition of some the cars I have seen is shocking even though dealers have described as pristine. What is interesting most of them are bad mouthing rival dealers....
