Difference between a 993 and 996 ?

well a 996 has a water cooled engine, and the 993 has an air cooled engine.
To avoid this turning into another tedious water vs air type debate, I'll leave it at this: some people like the old character, some people like the new progress.
Thanks....
Is a 996 worth the extra outlay?
Worlds apart.
A 993 and a 996 are like chalk and cheese.
I have owned both.
The 996 is modern, quiet, sleek and comfortable. It feels like the modern German GT car that it is, and if you are used to cars like modern Audi's , BMW's and Mercs it will feel familiar yet exciting.
The 996 was a completely new car for Porsche built in a new factory with modern techniques.
The 993 is quite different. The 993 has a relationship that goes back to the first 911's of the early 1960's. While it has no parts in common with these old cars, it still has the same air cooled engine and the same hand built, highly mechanical and engineered feel.
The 993 does not feel modern. The 996 does.
The 993 has a old fashioned feeling interior. The 996 feels modern and sleek, able to compete with a modern BMW or Audi.
The 993 takes some getting used to after a modern car. It will feel old fashioned at first. The 996 you can just hop into and drive, like any other ordinary car.
I had a 993 Carrera 2, which I changed to a 996 Carrera 4. Both lovely cars.
I am going back to a 993. It is much more old fashioned feeling, but the 993 to me is rawer and more involving.
A 996 GT3 gets this raw feeling back, but they are still more than £50K.
A 993 is my favourite below £50K right now.
I would mention, however, that as you are getting a cabrio then consider practical issues such as the fact that the 996 cabrio has a hard top which the 993 does not.
But drive both. But expect them to be quite different.

At least i know a bit more than i did a few mins ago.
I have until the New Year to make up my mind on what type of car and its nice to explore all options.
Blimey Tony, no wonder council tax is up, BiB in Porsches now
Nice to dream but this particular one might just turn into reality

You might find pricing is the other way around in some instances - depends what you've got to spend.
To get an idea, take a look at asking prices in 911 & Porsche World magazine and, if you can get a copy from a club member, Porsche Post magazine. (Porsche Club GB.)
Or, have a look at www.911virgin.com/ or maybe www.paragon.gb.com/sales/default.asp to give you an idea.

996 Cabs are great, dynamically almost as good as the coupe and better resale values
Go for the extra thrills of open top driving.
Supertest in sport auto 01/1998
996 300 bhp Coupe Nordschleife 8.17 min
against
993 285 bhp Coupe Nordschleife 8.28 min
Cabs are more difficult to sell in my experience.

They are also nicer to drive on a regular basis imho.
I had a 996 cab for a few months before my 996 c2, and I must say I loved the cab.
it was the main reason i moved from TVR to Porsche.
I also thing the cabs look nice too..
Were it not for the chance of an early slot on the 998 TT list by rolling my GT3 order, I would swop for a TT Cab right now!
Try them all...
NOT a fan of the Cab with hard top tho, looks like Jean Luc Picards Head!!
http://997tt.com/911/ for some 996 Cab shots, Aves et Sans Hardtop!
