Hadn't seen this posted here. I am not an advocate of the death penalty, but I would very happily and with a clear conscience send these two evil degenerates to their death without a second thought. What on earth goes through someone's mind that inspires them to such horrific acts? Let alone in the middle of the city in broad daylight! Sickening. You cannot leave your children alone for a moment as the penalties for these crimes are clearly not enough to have many thinking twice.

Well, heinous crime, of that there's no doubt, and these chaps will be punished doubly... Once by the courts, and the other by the chaps in prison...

However...

He was not raped in a shopping centre in broad daylight. They grabbed him and did it in a toilet.

So you are an advocate? Sorry for the trhead hijack, but why would YOU have to kill anyone under such tragic circumstances if the law would either :
1) do it for you legally, after due process

2) possibly prevent it from happening in the first place by having appropriate penalties in place to act a a deterrent to such horrific behaviour.
Sadly, you can't have it both ways!

As for these animals? Shoot them

It sounds an awful case, but that's the kind of knee jerk reaction that leads to mass paranoia.

I wonder how many low-life scum like these two there are in the country? A couple of dozen maybe?

It's much less likely to happen to your kids than it is for them to get killed by a car!

You sure ? Between the Catholic Church and grooming gangs that like kiddie rape, I'd say it's a bit more. A lot more.

They're still far more likely to be abused by family members than a stranger.

In Saudi Arabia (which gets so much flak, right or wrong, for abuse of human rights etc), these two men would be executed by public crucifixion/beheading after being lashed to within an inches of their lives by police continuously up to the point of execution.

I'm calm. My pi55 isn't boiling. I am being completely rational.
I think it would be, GENUINELY, in the best interests of this country if the same punishment was dished out here (especially given that the forensic evidence is going to be incontrovertible.)

Agreed.

A long execution, in full sight of anyone else who might be tempted to carry out similar acts.

All well and good. Unfortunately people are being released fom prison for rape, etc, quite often. I don't think our justice system is perfect enough to start executing people.

Death penalty in the US doesn't seem to control violent crime does it. I don't think there is a correlation between capital punishment and crime reduction - it just makes internet people sound tough.

Slightly lazy argument. US and UK are not the same. making comparisons between a "gun owning pioneer spirit culture" with a "non gun owning, flat cap, labrador and pasty culture" is fraught, even if we do speak broadly the same language hehe

The only viable comparison to make is between UK pre abolition of the death penalty (and the other steps taken to liberalise our criminal justice system) and today. Even then that's tough as people tend to argue that the doubling of the murder rate per million capita post the 66 abolition of the death penalty represents a post hoc fallacy when put forward as evidence that the death penalty was an effective deterrent in the UK. The common argument put forward instead is that "society has changed" - the irony is that I contend that it changed because justice and punishment got too lax!

And perhaps also that people stopped caring about strangers?

When you think about a 14-year-old out in the city centre at that time of the evening, when the footfall is pretty heavy and there are a lot of people about, the fact that someone could be marched across the street and into a store in this way is pretty horrific.
I find it a tad disheartening that he didn't think it was in his best interests to call for help.
