I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic six years ago.

For the first two years I went into denial, and didn't look after myself or take the tablets the doctor gave me.

4 years ago something clicked, and I started looking after myself and taking the medication.

However I am now suffering becouse of those first two years.

My eye sight is quite bad, and worse I have started getting numb hands and feet, and regular cramps.

The doctor says this is the start of nerve damage, and my limbs will never be normal again, there is also a possibility that this could Lead to needing a limb removed before the age of fifty.

So at 35 I am broken down, always tired, and only 95% of the father I should be to my kids.

If anyone knows any ways to lessen the pain of my hands and feet I am open to suggestions, most tablets don't seem to work for me.

PLEASE, IF YOU SUFFER FROM DIABETIES LOOK AFTER YOURSELF AND LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR.

frown fk me mate that brought a lump to my throat. What brought your Diabeties on if you don't mind me asking?

I've heard (I'm sure) that radical health change can eradicate it completely, or have I got that wrong?

Either way mate, don't beat yourself up over it, I bet theres loads of ways you can improve things, your only 35 so you at least have age on your side.

I weighed 22 stone when diagnosed, I'm now down to 17, with a target weight of 15 stone.

All my problems are down to eating to much junk food when single and working unsocial hours.

I only have myself to blame.

Some people believe diabeties can be reversed, and I believe that myself.

But once the damage starts, that can't be reversed.

Imagine having pin and needles, after you get rid of them, you are left with a slightly numb feeling, well that's how my hands and one foot feel all the time.

I've lost 4 stone since March and its been bery hard, so to lose 5 is a massive achievment. You say your target wieght is 15 stone, is that your doctors target or your own?

I really have no knowledge of the illness but there must be some treatment for the symptoms you have.

The 15 stone is my doctors target.

I'm only 5'10", so he is been generous, and allowing for my naturally large build.

I only know what the doc has told me, I see a consultant at the hospital next month.

I don't want any sympathy, I'm merely speaking to avoid anyone making the same mistakes.

You have a long life ahead of you, and this can be as healthy as the non-diabetic and sometimes better because you will be more careful.

You are doing absolutely the right things by reducing your weight, but also increase activity.

What medication are you on and what is the last HbA1C - the long term sugar level?

Do you check your fasting blood sugars? If not, do so daily and keep a record so you can see the trend. Noting your weight daily also helps your medical advisors.

Do you have an endocrinologist or are you relying on the GP?

i rely on the GP.

I take 4 metformin, 1 simvastatin, and 1 ramipril per day.

Long term sugars have reduced from 17 one year ago, to 9 as of last week.

I also have a manual labour job now, until a few months ago I was a carer for my wife, and led quite a lazy lifestyle.

9 is good, but you need to get under 7 really. You may need more medication to get you there.

Wish you well, the great thing is you are aware of your situation.

In the same boat as the op .

I weigh six and a half stone , down from ten and a half .

My big problem is diarrhoea . Pretty much after every meal .

I would google simvastins , just to be on the safe side .

Good luck and keep us updated , pm if you wish . Really gets me down some days , and I appear to be addicted to sugar . I managed to give up smoking and very rarely drink . I reckon the way forward is to exercise but I am so tired it is difficult to start .

Sorry mate you seem down but it's not the end of the world, I got this at 40 for same reasons as you I was 13 blood suger when diagnosed and this dropped to 5 with tablets and is rarely over 6.5 fasting blood test. To be on 9 ain't good get on an exercise bike, get doing something 9 is high if your on the tablets.

I was tingly when high suger but it went once under control and initially weight dropped off but now I can't shift it, the tabs don't help but I accept I need to lose more weight.

Don't beat yourself on food so much, no point being obsessive but no suger it's a killer - I have any food I want savoury but rarely a desert - suger free angel delight is good if you can find it.

My fiance has type 1 and may have the start of neuropathy. I've done research and the following might help (google them)

Alpha Lipoic Acid
Benfotiamine (vit B1)
Acetyl Carnitine
Methylcobalamin (vit B12 - Metformin can deplete your B12 which is needed for healthy nerves).

There seems no cure but you can help it be getting your blood sugar as low as possible (a low carb, low GI diet, exercise and loosing weight will help). Test, test and test your blood sugars and keep a record of them to look for patterns.

Keeping warm and exercise also helps.

Like I said, google the items above before you decide to take them.

Good luck and keep at it, it'll be worth it.

I have neuropathy (spl?) brought on by type 2 diabetes,I lost a lot of weight and was eventually taken off all the 4 metformin I was taking daily, I was also taken off the high blood pressure tablets. The neuropothy is with me for life though.
One ray of light for you though,my father in law had a stroke a few years before, and he refused to give in to it,and when I ended up with the neuropathy he told me, don't give up on it the brain will find another way,and seven years on,I have bad days , but you do learn to live with the pain and numbness, and I am able to do a lot more than I did at first.

Timely thread had a "Chat" with the doctor just over two weeks ago, he pulled up a graph of my sugars and weight not good reading, so have renewed vigor to get it sorted as over the last 8 years have had pretty good control, I think sometimes as diabetics we can forget the longer term implications that can occur as it's not a condition that is there day to day.

I'd originally headed to the doctor as I was thirsty and tired again and it's most likely due to my increase in average sugars my HBA1c had gone from 51 to 66 mmol/mol over the last 12 months.

I've three months to get my weight and blood sugars down so have embarked on renewed exercise and controlled eating, the blood test will be the bearer of the success of this.

Threads like this provide some realisms to the long term issues and I feel for the OP, concentrate on getting the weight down further and exercise regularly, we are trying to fit walks in a lunch hours and evenings it all helps. Keep a food diary and see what you consume day to day, I did this it's interesting and telling.
