What is this doing on here, you ask? Well, I was thinking yesterday that its all well and good having tautly set up performance saloons and hatches which can lap the nurburgring in 8 mins, but for commuting down broken back roads on the school run and to work, my VW passat is just top notch! Its a B5.5 1.8T saloon with 119K miles on it, which it wears well. Compared with all the modern rattly diesels, its whisper quiet at idle and because its not too heavy (1419 KGS) its brisk enough when you stir the box. Comical body roll when you chuck it about, but on its small 15 inch wheels and sensible tyres, its just so comfortable!! I find it just wafts me down those beaten up back streets and potholes and has big squidgy seats which are like your favourite arm chair...maybe its my age, but Ive grown to quite appreciate its charms!! Anyway, this is so "not pistonheads", but I like my old bus and can always nick the wife's 205 GTI if i fancy something more racy!

Trouble is, all the later generation are diesels, so Im not sure what I can replace this old girl with (the car, not the wife). Suggestions would be welcome!!

I agree with these bits! I can't agree about it mine being whisper quiet, as it has a tractor engine.

Oh, and Phaeton.

Yes, if you are a VW man the Phaeton seems an obvious choice. If you don't want to spend that much, try a D2 Audi A8. Even the 2.8 will offer an excellent blend of luxury and value, and you'll feel like a king every time you take it out.

Skoda Superb

Those cars float.... and you can get a 1.8T with 160 hp which is enough or go for the 3.6 V6 which is much more like it.

Skoda Superb isn't a bad car, but it's a stretched Passat, which drives like a stretched Passat, looks like a stretched Passat etc.

Phaetons look like stretched Passats, but that's where the similarities end. They're in a totally different, wholly superior league of gadget festooned continent crushers.

You aren't seriously recommending the Superb over the Phaeton? The Superb may be 'superb' if you're a taxi driver but the other one is a proper luxury car!

Thanks people, lovely car phaetons, but I need to reaffirm that Im a strapped for cash father of 2 who needs a car that doesnt drink too much juice!!!! They dont do a petrol Phaeton that doesnt drink the juice and cost a bomb on VED---shame!!

Skoda Superb 1.8 TSI is probably nearest match, or, dare I say it, A passat B6 1.8 TSI...

VW Jetta TSI sounds good, Insignia or even a good 'ol Mondeo 1.6 or 2.0 ecoboost!!
