Does anybody know about old books?

Hi,

My Dad was given a book a couple of years ago which we want to try and value. It is called 'Enamelled Impressions Struck Off from the Splendid Series of Medal Dies: Illustrative of the Holy Scriptures. Vol 1', by Edward Thomason. It is from 1835 we think. The cover isn't in great condition, and I think it is more valuable in a pair with Vol 2.

Is there anybody on here who may know where would be best to sell it? Would it be a good idea to stick it on ebay or not?

Try an Antiquarian book seller. Antiquarian books can be extremely valuable but many are not and will only fetch £10-20.

Hi mate, I did try emailing one book shop and they sent me a link to an auction where the same book sold for £930, but i think it must have been in better condition. I'm pretty sure this one won't fetch that much, but hopefully it will still be worth a bit.

The only auction sale catalogue on the web that I can find has that book is from 1992 at Christie's when a copy, doesn't say if it's both volumes, but I assume it is sold for £143.

If you want a valuation I'd suggest you arrange to take it to your local auction house, most do free valuation days and can give you a ball park figure.

Alternatively you could try Christie's or Bonham's they can usually give you a rough guide via an email. Address on their respective websites.
