Buying advice, used A6

Hello everyone, have been reading a few posts on here and would appreciate your feedback as I'm considering getting a used A6.
I drive a 2001 Saab 95 2.3 right now, love the seats, the comfortable motorway cruising, the amount of kit I got for the money etc. But it's finally time to change, and having briefly considered looking at a VW Phaeton I ruled it out because of running costs. I currently only do around 6k miles a year, but this will at least double in the next 12 months.
So now I'm thinking an A6. I have around £20k to spend, like the look of the saloon, but just not sure about the various options. I'm leaning towards the 3.0 TDi but then again I've never owned a diesel, not sure about S line (heard it's a hard ride?) so if any of you have any thoughts I'd really welcome some help!
(I also looked at the A8 but think it's a little large. I do like a nice big car, and they seem to come with loads of kit, but the A6 seems a more appropriate size.)

I really like my A6, sline ride is firm but it doesnt wallow so the kids dont feel travel sick. Boot is bigger than an A8 and there is plenty of space in the car too. It feels quite big enough when it comes to parking.
For 12k miles or less pa, I would consider the petrol cars as the dpf doesnt like low mileages much and is £££ to fix.
Mine is a 3.0tdi Le Mans, i have had from new, original plan was to keep it for 3 years, its now 5.5 years old and I see no reason to change it, it drives like new, is reliable etc

We've just bought a 2008 3.0TDI Avant S-Line Tiptronic.
The internet says it has a hard ride, it's best seeing for yourself. I don't find it hard on 19" wheels.
It's a big car and great for cruising and the Tiptonic suits the 3.0TDI perfectly, I had a manual A5 for a couple of weeks and didn't like it.
If you're after economy, then get a 2.0. You'll see around 10 mpg better, but the V6 is very good and shifts when you need it to.
I would avoid a multitronic FWD auto. There's a big thread on here about it

Great thanks guys, interesting thoughts on the petrol option - there don't seem to be that many about though.
I think I'll see about getting a couple of test drives to check out the ride on the S line. I see from a lot of threads here that the more recent years have been much improved ride-wise.

Bought my A6 3.0 Tdi a few weeks ago and it's superb. I've driven many cars and owned a fair few, but the engine mated to the tiptronic gearbox is one of the best combination i've ever driven, my friend has a slightly newer A6 2.0 Tdi with the 170bhp map and i feel it's slightly underpowered for such a big car, so definitely go for the 3.0 derv.
3.0 tdi tiptronic is excellent. If you are doing lots of town driving do not expect good mpg.
I keep thinking I need to sell mine, but I haven't found a newer car that is significantly better. Plus in the last 12 months depreciation on mine (according to we buy any car) has been negligable

Thanks Blueg33. I do like to keep my cars a long time (had my Saab 95 for 8 years, bought it at 4 years old), so that's reassuring to hear you say that.
I'm thinking looking at main dealers only since for my budget I can get one two years old or newer, and I figure for servicing / warrant or whatever it'd be safer. Any thoughts on that?

When my A6 was 3 years old I looked at the XF and these were my conclusions
Xf, good looking, made in uk.n smooth ride.n tacky dashboard, unsupportive seats felt like a Mondeo ghia X.n boot too small less rear leg and headroom, rwd a pita for me in a village in the winter, less power per £
These things may have changed. Oh and satnav way to fiddly and non intuitive

Hmm, I have been thinking about winter performance given that we are looking to move out of the city. That's one of the reasons I like the idea of the A6 Quattro, everybody who has one raves about performance in bad weather.
Note. They still have big wide summer tyres, and whilst they get moving ok,m stopping and steering is still a challenge. Because they pull away fine you can end up going too fast. Beats rwd handsdown thoughbig biscuits said:

Beats rwd handsdown thoughI had a 2.7TDI for a while and it was one of the best cars I've owned and I often give myself a damn good kicking for chopping it in for a BMW 330CD (ugh). My A6 had sports seats fitted (ie S-Line seats without the embossing) and although comfortable, they were a bit firmer than Saab seats. Not Mercedes firm but enough to aggravate my back problem after a couple of hours in the seat.
