Las Vegas Hotels - upgrade?

Off to LV shortly, been reading up and found a couple of places indicating that if you slip a few $'s into your passport when checking in you may get an upgrade, and if not they'll return the $'s.
Anyone had experience of this? Does it work? What's the patter? Staying at the Venetian

Used at two hotels in Vegas in the last fortnight. Great success.
Upgrade from basic suite to corner exec suite at Vdara.
Upgrade from 3x basic rooms to 3x luxury suites at the Luxor.
$20 in the passport with the credit card, and a polite "Is there any chance of any complimentary upgrades?"

At the Luxor, the guy checking me in shoved it in his pocket quickly and surreptitiously, muttering "I'll see what I can do for you." He came up trumps.
At Vdara he left it on the counter as if to say you've left that in your passport by mistake, then informed me he could upgrade me, and started doing loads of typing. I left the note on the counter as I left, and he nodded thanks and dropped it in his pocket as I left with the room key. No doubt I could have picked up the note, but I'd have felt like a bit of a t
t. It's nice to be nice. The bathroom was about the size of my entire London flat.
Both are part of the same big chain anyway.
My thoughts are that a trip to Vegas is quite expensive. Dropping $20 is not a lot, and it can cheer the people up who are checking you in, and probably don't get paid a lot for their job. (Also it seems to feel a little bit like a secret club too. Which is

O/T but can anyone reccomend good but cheap restaurants. The ones in the hotels seem overpriced for what they are. Though the Brazilian churrasica in the mirage looked okay.
Have done nobhill tavern in mgm and a Wolfgang pucks in ceasers. Likely to head to the Mandalay or belagio tonight.

Simplest method to a decent room is just to have stayed in the place before. First time we stayed at the Encore we were on a low floor facing a view of sod-all. Next year at the Wynn when we said we'd been in [essentially the same] property the previois year we got a decent view on a high-ish floor. 3rd time we had a suite on the 50somethingth floor with an absolutely stunning view.
Then the Wynn started to put its rates right up so we went to the Aria. First year a low floor and poor view. Second year (last year) a mid-level floor with a decent view; just back from the 3rd stay at the Aria on Friday and this time they put us on the 50th floor with a stunning view.

Stayed at the Wynn during June 2011. A $20 bill was put into one of the passports as we checked in. We were about to mention an upgrade possibility and before we could we pocketed the bill and said - "right, lets see if we have an upgrade available for you". Nice. The room was simply stunning, as was the whole overall experience.
