Post the number on Betaboyz and someone will probably decode it for you.

I left the VX sat on its arse since July because of a busted fuel pump. Too disorganised to take it to local garage, but eventually a friend and I towed it behind my Landy on Sunday. Fixed yesterday. Cost £136, including MoT. I am a tt.

After driving the car this morning I have revised my plan to sell it. I took the long way to the station.

My 1300 Coupe is going for a respray. If it comes out OK, I will get the same bloke to tidy up the HPE, which has patchy paint on bonnet and roof. The tail spoiler seems to have some sort of metal stiffener inside it which has turned to powder and is sprinkling the rear bumper. It's also a water trap. I will get it taken off and refitted. New ones are about as plentiful as unicorns.

HPE Volumex on eBay - good colour, and it has fog lights in the front spoiler, which mine hasn't.

Seeing as this has become the PH Beta thread, have something a bit special. If I was in a position to own something like this, I would be extremely tempted. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lancia-Beta-coupe-rally-...

£2650 in the end. Beta prices are odd. I doubt it would have made much more recommissioned with an MOT. It was last taxed in 1991, so could be interesting.

Beta prices are indeed odd. The Beta still has the twin curses of the Daily Mirror and of Clarkson upon it, although it is one of the best sporty FWD cars of the 70s/early 80s. I paid £2,000 for my HPE Volumex which was up and running with an MOT and tax. I have spent about £500 on its since I bought it, and it now has a fresh MoT.

That VX looked potentially very nice, very tidy interior (as far as one can tell from one photo).
Parked up since the 80's ....eeek

The first I have seen without a ratty driver's seat, but, as you say, eeeeek.

Crikey, the headlights on the HPE really are rubbish on dip. I had better get some better ones.

My Learned Friends

As per my previous post, I am currently in the process of trying to import my late Father's Lancia Beta 1600 Coupe (approx 1984 so late model) from South Africa and we have hit a bit of a snag in that at the South African police clearance check they cannot find the engine number at all.

I posted a photograph taken this morning which show the area where I understand the engine number should be but it is as per the photo, completely blank.

To me there are a few possibilities - it is somewhere else on the engine or it was never there, or replacement engine was installed - there does not appear to be any evidence of the number having been removed and the car last went through a roadworthy check in 2007 when the car was purchased and my Father never had any substantial work done on the car since then. - cars in south Africa only undergo a roadworthy (MOT equivalent) when ownership changes

if it is indeed blank, under what circumstances could that have arisen and what to do?

I have also posted same on the betaboyz forum but am stumped and 10,000 miles way!
