My brother has a 200k mile 2008 520d with some noisy engine issues.
The BMW dealer thinks it needs a new crankshaft and that the timing chain is catching on the housing. How they've found this without stripping it down I don't know!
Can anyone suggest a good specialist for a second opinion?
He lives near Chester but works all over so anyone north of about Birmingham is fine. Ideally someone with experience of the engine and its common faults.
Thanks

Bit too far North perhaps but Dean at DW Motorworks in Newcastle would get my vote. He was a BMW master technician and has been an absolute legend looking after my E65. http://www.dwmotorworks.co.uk/

Seem to know their onions, especially on Alpinas and M cars. Also, try Baymow in Hazel Grove - used them too, and they did good work on my old e36.

Autohaus in York. Strongly reccommended. Knowledgable, friendly and very professional. Everytime we have been there (for our E46 330i and E63 650i) we have come away seriously impressed with the service and pricing.
