As the HIGNFW transcript had already been referred to in the JS threads, I presumed that people would realise that my post was a reference to this, and not an insult directed at whoevers post immediately preceded mine.

To be fair, if a comment needs explanation as to why its not offensive it's not worth posting. Thing is, if that comment is viewed while at work it could cause issues and, quite frankly, it's just a step too far for the forums as it was posted and the reports we received confirm that.
The ban is fair in my opinion, it's only a temp forum removal so you can still access the majority of the site.
