I've got the 4x4 itch again and need a new vehicle in the next few weeks. Doing a lot less miles now than I was and the car I'm replacing only did 26MPG on average anyway, so fuel costs aren't a concern. I'll also be after one with an LPG conversion already done. At the minute I'm between a 3.9/4.0 Disco and a 4.0 Grand Cherokee.

Knowing me I'll end up splashing out on silly big tyres and an ugly A/bull bar with spots unless it comes with it already.

Are there any others I you would recommend?

Budget up to £3k I guess, it WILL spend time in rivers and traversing the local mountains and I'd cringe if I knocked anything more expensive on a rock..

Smart money would suggest the Jeep Cherokee with the IL6 engine.

£3k would also get you a Disco 2 with a V8 too smile

this might help, although the OP in that thread seems more concerned with refinement rather than off road ability.


Also is stating mpg isn't an issue but wanting LPG conversion already done - in the same sentence a bit of an oxymoron?

MPG is not a concern, but given vehicles around that price range tend to demand little or no premium for a gas conversion done, so it makes sense.

80 series Toyota Landcruiser all the way. The 4.2td is superb but if you want a petrol then the 4.5 is fairly manly and cheaper to buy. They come with 3 diff locks as standard, are unstoppable off road and are built like brick sthouses, mine is awesome (if mildly broken). There is loads of scope for adding ridiculous wheels, suspension lifts, bumpers, winches etc (I may have been looking scratchchin).

I build land rovers for myself and customers so am a big fan but i bought a wj jeep 2.7 overland last year its been hands down the best vehicle ive ever owned.

ive currently got a 2002 d2 v8 in the workshop that doesnt touch the way the jeep drives, drive both you will see what i mean the jeep is closer to the rangerover L322 than a d2 imho

also keep in mind the 4.7 v8 jeep is a hemi lump the d2 v8 is pretty gutless too i think compared to my chipped 2.7 crd

the overland jeep also has lsd's front and rear (quadradrive),tank guard, transmission guard, steering guard and rock sliders from the factory not to mention the 1" upcountry suspension lift, auto wipers and alcantara and leather interior and el dials.

dont get a limited go for the overland otherwise you will just be sad everytime you see an overland

hope that helps you abit, land rovers are great but i personally think there is better out there for the money

I have a WJ 4l 2000. I love it & I wouldn't have a LR product, my brother runs various ones all unreliable. The Jeep is super comfy, has been pretty reliable & is most importantly rust free unlike the equivalent LR product.
The consensus is that the 4litre I6 is better for LPG than the V8. They are also more plentiful & therefore a bigger pool of bits s/h.

Is that not more so to do with valve seat regression? A flashlube system should sort that, Non? Or is there another reason?

Yes it is the reason. I understand that there have been valve seat cracking issues as well.

I see.. I'll keep that in mind cheers. Anything else to look out for during a test drive/inspection? I hear there's issues with the A/C breaking itself during self tests and no hot or cold air on one side.

Edit: Just realised I asked for an "S6 Engine" ffs.. spa rolleyes

Check that everything works. The heating & a/c issue is the opposite of most cars. Set the climate to hot & makes sure it blows hot, both sides. This is the blend door issue which is £150-200 to sort. Then turn the temp down on the climate & check you get cold air out when the a/c cuts in. When you start it check the o/d light comes on then goes out. Otherwise the gearbox ecu is stuffed. Check all the warning lights are going on/off as they should. The driveline whines a bit but shouldn't be excessive, the axles need synthetic oil changed every 15-20K. Wheel bearings can suffer especially if offroaded & the fronts are not cheap. Dip the gearbox oil & check it is roughly to level, is bright pinky red, not blackened & doesn't smell burnt. The box is due an oil & filter change at 90K check it has been done. Cost is around £200 or so, but MUST use Dexron IV not anything else. Pre 2002 cars should have had the front callipers changed from the ATEs to the later Akebonos. Google it before you look so you know the difference. The cost for the new callipers as a kit with pads is £300.

Turn the volume up on the stereo & fade it to the front. The tweeters in the top of the dash should be OK & not rattle. A pair are $50 from the US & 20 minutes to change.

Some good tips ^^^^^^
I have a 4.7WJ 2000. I don't have the caliper upgrade but replaced with new discs/cals from ecp and they have been fine. I have had a couple of lambda sensors on mine but little else. Got dash tweeters off eBay and there ok. No rust and a really solid motor. Plenty of info on mods and fault finding from the US too. Ours was in a 50mph sandwich between a Touran and a Fiesta it needed bumper repairs tank rad and is still going strong. Pretty nippy too!

I've seen that in the states the Overlander has a higher output v8, does the same apply in the UK?
