A mate of mine has just passed his test and his parents have bought him a VTEC Accord...IMO, not a great first car (he'll get shanked on insurance and drive like a tt!) but I've decided it's time for me to upgrade and splash on a new car.

I'm looking for something that'll be able to rival his Accord speed/acceleration-wise, without spending a damn fortune...

Any ideas/suggestions?

EDIT: It's the 2001 model

Comparing stats directly just gets you into an arms war. wink

Buy something left field and lightweight that will encourage good driving skills..

Budget?

I dont see whats wrong with a 1.8 accord for your first car, probably not too bad on insurance due to not many young people driving them, and should be reliable.

They arent fast, so I wouldnt worry about that.

Haha, that's true wink

I dunno, I just don't want some newbie rich kid who I've been driving around for the last 2yrs suddenly rinsing me on dual carriageways etc because his parents bought him a car >_< Petty, I know, but what can I say?

Budget is only around £800, so I'm probably pushing it!

Yes and Yes - agree with both points. I considered one once as my second car - Very much an old man's car, so wont be as bad on insurance as you'd think.

Why don't you get a 2.0 litre one? wink

We're both 21, and the insurance is going to be around 3 grand a year for him.

I drove like a dick in my first car (1.0L Saxo) and, had it been a 1.8 I'd have almost definitely crashed.

I'm in the minority then...maybe I'm overthinking it? Either way, I still need a new car and I'm ready to step up from my 1.6 Escort smile

Yes, you are overthinking it.

How about a Mk1 MX5? (I know it is the default reaction to all cars) - will be fun on the twisty stuff, plenty of affordable mods and for a £1k there are plenty about.

It's an excellent first car. More comfortable, spacious, faster and well equipped than all his mates' Fiestas and 106s and Corsas. Sounds like a good choice.

Buy a car you want not one to rival his.

Do you really think of things like that? I had a mate like you, everytime one of us bought a car he bought a faster one. Then at 22 he had kids now he drives a 1.9 tdi Zafira.

Buy what you like and want instead of trying to enter a pissing contest against a mate with a rep mobile.

With no effort at all these are all more interesting:

Cars are about *how* you drive them, not "mines got 122bhp vs your 105bhp"... as is PH.

Otherwise, save you money and buy some advanced roadcraft type lessons and improve your overall driving point to point?

Are you sure its going to be that much? Sometimes cars like this are cheaper than a 1.0 saxo because they are a lower risk.

Just because its a 1.8 doesnt make it fast, its much heavier than a 1.0 saxo!

Primera GT?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSAN-PRIMERA-P10-eGT-S...

No idea on insurance but they also did an SRi with 130bhp (GT is 150 I think).

I had an SRi for a while and I loved it. Inside is a bit plastic and shiny but it was ultra reliable, handled ok and was big inside.

Or go the luxo barge route smile

As usual, you're all right...rather than trying to one-up him, I should just get a car that I want to drive smile

The Primera looks pretty cool, not a bad price either?

Not when you're old and miserable wink

How about a Puma? I wish I'd owned mine years ago and despite having less power the Accord won't see which was it went if the road isn't straight.
