Need a new heart rate monitor, gym work, running and cycling.

What's a good one, good spec etc, possibly with GPS

I've had a Garmin Forerunner 301 for about 5 years, bought it second hand and it still works perfectly.

Its quite old tech now, but that means it is available on Fleabay for about £90. It has a HRM, GPS, training partner built in (good for pace setting and intervals). All the info can be downloaded on to a PC for review.

Suunto Ambit works well for me and can be tailored to your requirements, on terms of display information etc via the website.

Farming 301's are very sought after units, they only get let down by their battery life. I have a Suunto Metron, similar to the advisor, had it 8 years, fantastic unit and very tough. It all depends on how much you want to spend, try the clymb website, they do serious discounted outdoor kit

Are these new wrist band things that monitor everything including sleep cycles not the way to go these days, not tried myself but seem to do a lot more than a fancy watch alone?

Interesting, had no idea they were so popular. I have not had any issues with the battery life on my 301 on the main unit. Had to replace the battery in the HR sensor a couple of times.

Purely for the gym if its Technogym CV kit just buy a T31 coded heart rate band for around £8.

As for the outside work Garmin would be my choice.
