The chassis is back and so the rebuild is about to commence!!! I've got a dirty great shopping list and thanks to all of the information here, I have alternative sources and details for most things. bow

However, the things I still need to research are the washers, nuts & bushes...

Much like Tanguero's 'Bolt Sizes WiKi', I don't suppose anyone has taken the time to compile a detailed (or even scribbled on the back of a fag packet) list of the sizing & types of nuts & washers required on the suspension? I'm going to study the parts list shortly but if anyone already has one then that'll save me the effort.

Also... Bushes! I'm looking at using mainly rubber bushes in my re-build... If I were to go completely poly, it'll be a doddle but as I'm looking at rubber, has anyone found an alternative source for these?

Cheers,

M

Can't help with your question but your thread title reminded me of the story where an escapee from an asylum sexually assaulted some women doing their laundry, then ran away.

Headline was "Nut screws washers and bolts"

I have loads of washers if you need them. All new zinc coated. About 2mm thick ones. When I rebuilt my front this year I found the washers I had from the kit I brought had deformed even with the correct torque due to being thin.

I have the two sizes needed for the suspension. Let me know how many you want and ill post them out.

I brought in bulk lol

Cheers Peter,

I'll be needing enough to do an entire car but useful knowing that there are only 2x sizes.

I'll drop you a PM.

Not sure if I understand the question, but the nuts and washers need to be the ones to fit the bolt sizes in the wiki confused

Forgive me if I am teaching egg sucking, but a 7/16" UNF bolt needs a 7/16" UNF nut and a pair of washers with 7/16" holes in them, etc. All nuts are Nyloc type and all the sizes are in the wiki.

Split washers is a bit of an interesting one - despite the fact that they were originally fitted there is a good deal of research that shows that they actually reduce the locking effect of a an otherwise properly torqued bolt and make it more likely to work loose rather than less! http://www.boltscience.com/pages/helicalspringwash...

There are only about 3 sizes of standard suspension bush that you need to worry about. The front drag strut has a special bush, the ARB bushes depend on the size of your ARB, likewise the shock bushes depend on which shock adsorbers you have. The rest of the wishbone bushes are standard size apart from I think the front upper rear bush which is shorter. Your best bet is phoning somewhere like TVR Power who will be able to sell you a complete set.

Using spring washers with nylock nuts isn't really needed. Spring washers are there for when used with normal plain nuts, although the TVR stuff is both.

There weren't any plain nuts on my suspension - it was all nyloc, where as you say, you certainly don't want a spring washer.

The manual mandates spring washers on the drive shaft bolts and the body to outrigger bolts, though as per the above link I think they are of dubious value.

i meant in my reply that the tvr stuff was both spring and nylock. Thats what i replaced mine with although being an engineer knew wasn't really needed, but have never seen a bolt loosen that has used both and i work with machinery that vibrates on purpose.

I see what you mean. My suspension was plain washers and Nyolc only. Probably due to whatever they had in the parts bin on the day.

Sorry, I should have explained a bit more but I was wondering if there were any washers that have a larger outer diameter.

When I stripped mine down, it was a bit of a mixed bag in places. However, now that I've had a chance to study the parts & workshop manuals in a bit more detail, I can see that it's all fairly standard across the board.

Its all fairly standard unless you are using poly bushes in which case there are a couple of special size washers. However those are supplied with the bushes along with instructions as to where they go.

I just used thick (Form A) stainless washers for everything apart from the specials for the poly bushes.

Form sizes are here

BTW - Is that where you go to get your bolts?

I used to use Stag but they shut down a little while ago, so I'm on the lookout for another recommendation.

OK... So here's what I did:

I gave up trying to sort out a rubber 'kit' and went for the PowerFlex option instead on the basis that it was available as a kit and I could do without the faff at the moment. If I want to change it at a later date, I can do. FWIW - I ended up getting it from Tim at ACT.

Nuts, bolts, etc... Mostly came from Namrick, based on Tanguero's bolt WiKi, with the remaining metric bolts coming from Westfield Fasteners. I think the WiKi might need a little tweak as the front lower shock bolt is a smidge too short.

Can you add the size of yours to the Wiki as an option? The size in there is correct on my car but I am sure that there is a certain amount of variation.
