30 years after ROTJ.....

do we have any credible plot synopses at all yet?
Depends if you mean a synopsis of a credible plot or a credible synopsis of a plot.

In either case, unlikely at this time.

I don't know. I guess we will see.

I am however ridiculously excited.
The last time I was excited about a film/hype and the excitement was justified was Jurassic Park.

I really am sceptical about this. Think the new name is pants. I'm happy to be proved wrong. The Lego Movie was much better than I expected.....

The most I can allow myself right now is "cautiously optimistic".

Well, whatever it's like its 'in the can'. Principle photography finished yesterday.

And I can't wait to see it. I think some of the haters are a little bit too cool for school over the whole thing. It's a story. Its Star Wars. It's gonna be great.

I'm more towards the optimistic side but can't bring myself to get past The Phantom Menace

Watching Godzilla the other night reminded me that they could serve up a perfectly good film and we could still all find it a bit 'Meh'. I don't think Godzilla was a bad film, I just think we've been over fed huge effects laden summer blockbusters and anything they could offer would have been seen before, especially by the geekier (which covers any adult still interested in Star Wars) fans.

Nothing will touch the originals, because they were released during an entirely different phase of cinema and to a different audience. The prequels were effectively released to a barrage of adults, pissed off because they'd matured beyond the point of enjoying aliens fight monsters (and were too insecure to embrace the adultier themes of Star Trek) in space.

Where these new ones will fit, I don't know. They'll probably be great, but in the same way the latest Star Trek were great - amazing production values, safe as houses script with global (read; not too talky) appeal, and the odd darker moment / hark back to Empire to appease the cynical geeks.

Looking forward to seeing the massive yellow STAR WARS blast on screen, but fully aware that i'm too old for this st (and that's OK)

That's what we said about The Phantom Menace.

Those of us who had our eagerness and hopes so cruelly dashed back in 1999 are being understandably more wary this time. That doesn't make us "haters"; it just means we are being more cautious in our optimism this time.

Indeed.
It has a better chance of at least being decent without Lucas at the helm.

Somewhere in a dusty recess at Ruffcutt Towers I have a VHS recording of The Big Breakfast which premiered The Phantom Menace trailer back in 1999. Still the only movie trailer I ever downloaded over a dial-up connection, which took about a day back then biggrin

Fingers crossed for VII.

Sadly, if The Phantom Menace had been even half as good as the trailer was then it would have been pretty good. I still remember that gorgeous shot of the Gungams coming out of the mist riding whatever animals they ride. It was probably the best-directed bit of the film - which probably means that someone other than George Lucas directed it. biggrin

Sorry I am going to have to disagree with this entire paragraph. The reason the prequels weren't received as well is because they were sh*t, it has nothing to do with my expectations as a grown adult. Yes I first watched Star Wars as a kid but I can still watch all 3 OT films and enjoy them immensely as an adult, I can't with the prequels.

You can make a film for kids without having to make them childish, a skill Lucas seems to have forgotten with the prequels, I certainly don't remember any fart gags in the OT. I guess by ROTJ the rot had started with the teddy bear Ewoks. To be fair though they were originally meant to be an army of Wookies but they didn't have the budget\technology at the time so I'll let that slide.

It's a shame as their are some flashes of occasional brilliance in all 3 prequels, it's a shame that it's overshadowed by a crap script (tax disputes, what happened to good old fashion good vs evil), mostly poor performances from even the heavyweights, the reduction of Darth Vader into in turn an annoying little tt and then a teenage whiny annoying tt. Even the mystical force doesn't escaped unharmed and is reduced to what amounts to an STD. The prequels don't flop under the weight of my expectations, they flop under the weight of so many bad errors in judgement.

The one thing I am confident of is that Disney are masters of getting audience balance right, they know how to make kids films that have a much broader appeal. Still I am not getting my hopes up just yet, not after last time.

Defo a whole lot of Too Cool For School going on. I was at the midnight showing of Phantom at the cinema on opening of general release. Nobody was unhappy during the film. It's still the only time I've been to a UK cinema and ppl were dressed up and cheered/generally acted like Americans during a film.

There was not much wrong with it.

I don't hate the prequels but I do hate Hayden Christiansen. That NOOOOOOOOO was just wrong.

Do you not think that had more to do with the atmosphere and anticipation on the night? I too was there on opening night and while the atmosphere was brilliant going in, I can distinctly remember leaving the cinema in a mild state of shock as my brain couldn't process the fact that they'd made manage to screw up a Star Wars film. When I had some more time to think about it the next day and talk it over with friends, my worst fears were confirmed, it just wasn't that good. I am too much of a sci-fi nerd to be too cool for school too so I can't even blame that. smile
