Killing Darth Maul: Lucas' big prequel trilogy mistake? - http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/star-wars/32094/ki...
Have to agree with this totally. Take what IMO was the best character to appear in all 3 prequels and piss him away. Then to make things worse, replace him with a geriatric Peter Cushing who much as I admire him as an actor, was well past his sell by date to act as a credible threat to Obi Wan and Anakin, the fight scenes in which he featured where just painful to watch. Then get rid of him to replace him with possibly the second worst CGI character in the prequels, General Grievous, an asthmatic robot who spends most of his screen time coughing or running away (despite apparently killing Jedi's for fun previously).
Darth Maul SHOULD have been the nemesis throughout all 3 prequels with Palpatine playing his traditional puppet-master role.
From the Telegraph then

I am a massive Star wars Fan\Geek but reading that rumour makes sense.
Spoiler Below Maybe......
Doing what they say in regards to Han would make sense, he always felt the character shouldn't have carried on past Empire and if they do away with him, it gives the kids a bit of moral clout to want to kill sith.
I don't want to read too many spoilers if at all, but tbh its so secure anything has to be taken with a big pinch of salt, but I like the conjecture. So looking forward to it though.

Interesting article on Kotaku about canon / lore, which talks about the upcoming Alien sequel where Alien 3 & 4 did not happen, then goes on to talk about JJ Abrams shunting the entirety of Star Trek lore onto an alternate timeline and then, which is of most interest to this thread, is the news that the entire Expanded Universe never happened.
Ok, the official line has always been that the Expanded Universe and the films operate on different canon (according to George Lucas) but this is the first time I have heard it definitely stated that the EU never happened and is not canon. The EU is being rebranded as "Legends"
That's a big shame, because for decades LucasArts / LucasFilm have gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure that the EU holds together and no story contradicts another, which has been a massive undertaking. To effectively rip that all up and say that none of it ever happened is a shame.
This could mean that Han and Leia never married. That would be massively unpopular though.
(I have not read any spoilers on the upcoming film. Please keep any spoilers in spoiler tags)

Further info (which is linked to by the above article, but I thought it worth highlighting):

Also, the second link paints things in a much more positive light, suggesting the EU / Legends are going to strongly influence writers no matter what. We shall see.

Personally I think it's probably good that the new films are not fettered by anything written in the EU, but that they can cherry pick the nuggets and leave the dross. It was the woeful quality control and glut of stuff that turned me away from it, after the early fantastic trilogy.
I don't consider the 'prequel' ste cannon...
The original three films pre-meddling stand in a vacuum.

I loved the Thrawn trilogy, (apart from those creatures that put out an anti-force bubble - that bit was cr@p) and then quite liked the black fleet stories. There were other good books - the Cantina Tales one in particular. The Dark Forces game also had a reasonable story line (and book - yes I was that sad).
However, the shear glut of EU stuff coming out meant that it was impossible to follow al the stories without becoming a full time geek and so I lost interest. So, I for one, would be happy if that were swept aside.

It's a fair comment. My reading of EU isn't much more extensive. However, the shear glut of EU stuff coming out meant that it was impossible to follow al the stories without becoming a full time geek and so I lost interest. So, I for one, would be happy if that were swept aside.
There are certain things I would like to see kept though - large scale stuff like Leia and Han marrying and having kids, Luke meeting Mara Jade, the Grand Admiral Thrawn crisis, stuff like that.
Edit: I loved Dark Forces. Also the Dark Horse comics of Luke temporarily turning to the Dark Side were pretty good too.
There are some great EU stories and characters but a lot more rubbish
Anything by Timothy Zahn is good, Kevin J Anderson, not so good. It's like comparing Martin Scorcese to Michael Bay.
I'd like to see a Rogue Squadron film or TV series though. Anyone else Remeber Space: Above and Beyond, without the missing bird sub plot.

Of course, the Star Wars canon could have been so different if this had happened...
