Off Topic:

I believe the 12 age rating still exists but its never used now, as a lot of pressure from studios on the ratings places (like BBFC) to ensure maximum audience revenue.

Its so annoying as you get heaps of films with usually young parents in with kids WAY innaporopriate age for the film, The spectre one above is a good example, Hunger games too.

These films have scenes in them that are fine for maybe a 10 year old + but i have seen 5-8 years olds in these screening and they just shouldnt be there, either, scared (spectre), not remotely paying attention and speaking constantly or theres stuff like some violence and sex scenes, that while tame to you or I, are not appropriate for under 12's

I dont have an issue with kids in films, but i dont like what are sometimes edging towards quite innapropriate for young kids but parents see the 12A rating like the old PG.

What minimum age would you consider is suitable for Star Wars films?

OT but this! Spectre for a 9/10 year old probably too much, but Star Wars... Why the 12A rating?

Its probably just over a PG but not enough for a full 12, so 12A is your man.

It could be 'mild peril' or scenes of torture (which we can maybe draw conclusions from a flash in the trailer)?? we dont know.

But i have seen 12a's go from happy with some action (marvel) to stuff that i would say is definitely a 12 10 years ago, Spectre, thumbs in eyes and drilling.

My 5 1/2 year old wont be going to see it at the cinema (even though I saw the original at the same age) She would never sit through the 135 minute run time, be asking questions every 20 seconds and maybe even scared. I have had a number of cinema experiences ruined lately by less considerate parents whose children do exactly this.
If it turns out to be a U like the original trilogy and they have a Saturday morning kids showing then maybe I will reconsider.

I'm pretty sure (99%) he will be fine, he's been to the cinema lots and we have a home cinema screen as well so he will sit still for the duration. I like taking him, I get his sense of wonder and when he's worried about the mild peril. Plus it's the sort of age I was first time around.
I might get asked the odd question but he knows to whisper this.
I would take him out if he was being a bother to other people.

Just finished rewatching episodes 4, 5 and 6 with OH, she'd never seen them, and did enjoy them.

ROTJ is my fav, and the final 20mins or so always makes me feel a bit emotional.
Yeah, same.
A real shame that LUcas destroyed the old perfect ending, Seb Shaw and the song, with that twonk and an awful song.

I'd imagine ratings will be revealed within the next few weeks along with the BBFC's guidance.

I was around the same age when I saw it in 1978. There was one big difference between then and now though.... Films used to have an interval. (At least at the odeon in Uxbridge) so effectively it's like two one hour films.

Even back in the seventies the 'intermission' was probably more to do with the cinema's own practice (trying to flog refreshments) rather than the film maker's intention. The only film I've ever seen with an interval was the 1989 reissue of Lawrence of Arabia - understandable at a running time of three and a half hours!

12 is home release only, 12A is theatrical only...which feels like a concession to the industry as you say.

The 12/12A rating guidelines read a bit more like the 15 rating 'back in the day', infrequent use of the f word, brief nudity and gore etc are all ok for a 12A. I certainly don't remember anything remotely as intense as SPECTRE ever getting a PG rating, which is essentially now what a 12A is at the cinema.

Considering the benchmark for a PG is the 'average' 8 year old, I don't think anyone below 9 should be watching a 12A in the cinema, for the benefit of other patrons if nothing else (I have a kid, so I understand the reasoning for wanting to do so).

Sat down and watched A New Hope with my 9 year old last night (watching in release order) to get him interested.

Only watched in bed on an iMac, but with the bose sound dock for a bit of oopmh, I was surprised at how well this film stands up visually, considering it's getting on for 40 years old!

Son really enjoyed it...looking forward to getting through the remaining films now.

Now the important question, will you be watching the prequels too? Personally I don't think I could put myself or anyone else through that torture so I think I'd just pretend they don't exist and skip to the new one when it comes out.

My 9 yr old has absolutely no interest, but that's mainly because he knows I want him to watch them punch, so I sat my 6 yr old daughter down to watch 4, 5 & 6 (not 1-3 obviously) in preparation for taking just her to the cinema to see it together. She is already in full lightsabre in dressing gown belt mode.... #prouddaddy

I see Disney are ramping up publicity now - there are multiple TV spots and a proper clip from the movie. Fortunately they only reveal tiny segments of extra footage and that footage is of scenes already revealed in the trailers - so not too much given away. The fate of Luke and the Serkis role remain hidden.

Only 3 weeks to go!

In the US the film has been rated PG-13, more or less equivalent to our 12A.
