No such thing as resilient systems in the gaming world? The gaming world run there games on server farms, just like any other large organisation. I work in the IT industry and put these kinds of things together. I think my banking clients would find it very amusing if I told them I had to take their systems down for a few hours every few weeks to patch the servers. This technology has been available for quite a while too. It's very easy to build almost 100% uptime into any system, the industry standard is 5 nines (99.999%) which is near as dammit to 100% that it doesn't make a difference.
Peak demand\high load making servers slow\unreliable is also another unforgiveable area considering you can spin extra server capacity up and down as user load dictates in seconds these days. Large online internet companies like Amazon et manage to cope with fluctuating user traffic\load by using this technology.
For an alleged technology led sector, the gaming industry appears to be living in the dark ages sometimes. Rather worrying when with the massive push these days to online only. I also play Destiny, another online only game. It was down for 4 hours the other day, right in the middle of the evening prime playing time "for updates". Very poor to be honest.
The gaming and banking industries are very very different, the way the servers are used the amount of load on the servers is I would imagine very different, patching the server is only part of the challenge often if an exploit is found and needs to be address or a game breaking bug needs to be fixed then both the server side software and the client side software need to be fixed, can that be done while the gamer keeps playing, id imagine thats quite a challenge. It is probably possible to do but as someone else has already said, cost prohibitive. Ohh and destiny, that a pathetic excuse for a game, all that money spent, its a blatent copy of another game but with better graphics, activision the plot years ago with regards games (look at the games they have distributed recently), it doesn't surprise me they are bringing it down at prime time.Peak demand\high load making servers slow\unreliable is also another unforgiveable area considering you can spin extra server capacity up and down as user load dictates in seconds these days. E has no distributor so i hold a little more faith in their business practices as they haven't done anything silly as yet.
Business is about profit, server downtime doesnt affect profit in gaming, in the banking industry it I imagine does.
TBH server downtime in gaming seems like a bit of a 1st world problem to me. Its irritating yes but as long as they communicate it well then their shouldnt be a problem, it is a leisure activity after all.

I have no idea where my free eagle even is, I spawned in the middle of nowhere and I haven't even seen a proper station with shipyard and outfitting yet, just little outposts with limited facilities
Look in shipyard under ship locations, mines friggin miles away.Apparently they've patched it now, if you start a new game the eagle is in the same system you start in, but not necessarily the same station.
I've flown the eagle loads in beta anyway, whereas I deliberately avoided the cobra up till now because I knew I had the kickstarter one, so i was trying the other ships.

I knew that, it's taken me ages to find a shipyard, found one now, eagle is 113 light years away, looks like it can stay there....

How did you get your cobra? i was sure the beta players should have got another free ship in addition to the cobra.Apparently they've patched it now, if you start a new game the eagle is in the same system you start in, but not necessarily the same station.

The cobra was only available if you backed in kickstarter at a high enough level, the free ship all preorders get is the eagle, which should be stored somewhere, look in ship locations in a shipyard as mentioned above.

Being a Beta backer is the only way you will be able to play Elite: Dangerous until 16th December. In addition to that and the other existing Beta benefits such as Mercenary Edition and automatic permit to visit Sol, today we are also announcing:
25% off in-game ship insurance for life to all our Beta backers
free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!
as a ‘thank you’ for all their help.

The 5 new ships aren't in game yet, they are post release, you will get one when they add them.
That statement isn't very clear. Mind you, none of their statements are very clear, that's why they keep stirring up trouble on the forums...

AHHHHHHhhhhh bugger, that makes sense thenAccording to Braben, those who pre-ordered can start playing the single player tutorials from tomorrow, beta access isn't required Gives us plenty of time to configure things and get to grips with the controls and mechanics. Looking forward to this now.

I got the Gamma test email earlier today. I didn't pay for beta but I was a Kickstarter backer.
I now don't have a hotas and won't get one until December.
Bugger.
I'm in same situation ie a backer but didn't pay for the beta phase so I was surprised when the email came through. I had a go last night at docking and undocking and have to say the game looks superb. Shame my docking skills weren't quite up to scratch I now don't have a hotas and won't get one until December.
Bugger.
I take it we can't play the game in gamma though just being a backer?
Thnaks Foliage, I literally had 5 minutes to have a quick peek at it last night and visually (across my triple screens at 5760 x 1080 ) it looked lovely. I take it that when the game goes live on 16th December the world is 'reset' ie the progress the beta and gamma gamers have made doesn't continue?
