Likewise thanks Ash, useful to know. I really must read the ED forums more often!
Try this: http://eft.recoil.org/. It pulls out the moderator comments so you don't miss anything 'official'.Grumfutock said:
TrackIR, worth it for Elite? Seems to be popular on the youtube vids so I wondered if I should invest.
I use one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di7lZ6keBi8I also use it for FSX, Cliffs of Dover, racing games it's very good. You can look around smoothly to find targets and keep you eye on the target as you manoeuvre your craft onto it. Move forward, back, left, right as well and rotate.
However I bought my TIR5 3/4 years ago and had good use out of it, I'm now looking at VR (Oculus Rift, Valve, Samsung, Razor and others) but not just yet as they are getting smaller and cheaper and they still have the issue of multi-controls with the headset on, how can you use the keyboard to control all the options and systems in game without taking the headset off if you don't have 50 spare programmable buttons on your flightstick.
TrackIR now and VR later? As with all new tech VR will get better so if I was in your shoes again now, I'd still get a TrackIR first and use it for a couple of years at least and let VR catch up.
If you already have a half-decent webcam then there's FaceTrack NoIR as well. It's a freeware clone of TrackIR that uses standard webcams instead of proprietary hardware. There are videos on youtube detailing how to get it working with ED.
I've got the software and got it working with a Sony PS3 Eye camera, haven't tried setting up for ED yet though. Going to buy Oculus once they are released.

I have one, I also use it for arma.
It does give a marked improvement in elite, easier for tracking targets, and also makes using the side panels much smoother and easier. It adds a lot to the experience of dogfights when you look up to see your opponent whizzing overhead.
There are cheaper DIY options available, but I haven't tried them so can't comment.

Ps. I have the TrackIR5 with the unpowered cap fitted clip and also the powered Pro-clip. I always used the pro-clip, it clipped to headphones but it was always annoying to setup up, extra cables and I often hit the clip when adjusting headphones. It was only recently I tried out the cap clip for the first time and it's got exactly the same performance, so you don't need the pro-clip if it's not included in the package.

Possibly with extreme movement the cap clip has limitations, peak covering the top reflector but if your sensor is mouted at a good height on your monitor it shouldn't prove a problem.
You can set up the TrackIR using the program it runs, get into a comfortable playing position and hit the reset button to centre everything. If you find it's not right in game you can set up a key (usually F12) that you can press to reset it in game. There's also a pause key if you are for example trying to read something small on screen and don't want your head moving about when you have zoomed in.

You can set up different profiles for it for different games, some people set deadzones where the side menus are to make it easier to access them, I tried one with that but I didn't like it. It comes with default and smooth profile as standard, can't remember which is best for elite now.
I do use a custom profile with a large deadzone in the centre for FPSs such as Arma, so you need a definite turn of the head to look round, as it makes me a bit queasy if there is too much head movement and not enough of a frame of reference for it.

Another TrackIR user here (with the pro-clip) it's amazing and I wouldn't be without it, especially in combat when you get ships boosting away and you're trying to stay on them. I also use whilst sim-racing too to spot people doing cheeky dives down the inside!
Starting to wish I had this in my iracing days.anonymous said:

It's very clever, you never lose your view on the screen, the movement is amplified. For example to look over your shoulder in Cliffs of Dover to spot a 109 on your tail is only a partial turn (25 degrees) maybe.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AO0F5sLdVM

Yeah, it feels much more natural than you think it will.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AO0F5sLdVM
