For a coffee recommendation have a look at Starbuck's Guatemala Antigua. Back in a store near you now!

If your response was directed at my comment, to be clear, I wasn't saying that hand grinders cannot be burr grinders, I was saying that hand grinders are a PITA. I know, I had one, which is why I now have an electric one smile
quite like the time it takes myself, depends how quickly you want a cup of coffee!
There are hand grinders and there are hand grinders. This is the latter.

24 seconds to grind a 17g dose eek

(btw, all hand grinders are burr grinders - it'd be a bit challenging to make a hand-powered spinny blade grinder...)

That's a nice looking bit of kit. Is it actually better at grinding?

Certainly nicer to look at than my kitchen aid jobbby!

That's a really nice grinder, but nearly $1000 for a hand grinder? You could get a really nice electric one for that!

It has massive commercial burrs and looks to be seriously well made, so I would imagine the grind quality would be equally as good as the best commercial grinder, and there are other advantages like the design of the grind chute which avoids stale grinds being trapped. The price is probably on par with an excellent electric grinder like a Mazzer Mini E, but the burr set is the same as what you'd get in $2000+ grinder.

If I had that sort of money to drop on a grinder, I would actually consider one - it's much more suited to home use than the usual small commercial grinders, and I suspect it would do a better job. However, I don't have anything like that kind of money to drop on a grinder...

Jeez, I was looking at the Porlex, either the regular or the mini. A damn sight cheaper than that thing! The link to the machine was just a bit of daft man maths thinking. Given that I drink at most a couple of mugs a day all topped with a good glug of milk it makes no sense to buy a machine.

Is there much of a taste difference between coffee made in the aeropress vs a french press? Using my backup french press at the moment and I'm getting addicted to Taylors Lazy Sunday!

$948. For a grinder. I do admit it's a lovely bit of kit, but you're paying for the design of the grinder, not the quality of the grind it produces.

yes Once you get above the $4-500 range, any improvements in grind quality would be very, very marginal.

i know you jest, but from reading posts on this thread it would appear many contributors genuinely believe that quality has an entirely linear relationship with cost.

Hand grinder question. Porlex/porlex mini or Hario? Porlex is twice the pride but the build quality seems superior plus its JDM YO.

I have the Hario, build quality not an issue imo.

that's one for the "these pictures will make your teeth itch" thread. Can tell it's hand-built.

Is this the one you have? My concerns are with it having a glass base. It will be used and kept in the office kitchen where I have already dropped and broken a french press! Saying that if I dropped any ceramic grinder I would probably break the burrs too.
I had a look at the mini but from what I've read the plastic retaining nut for the handle cracks over time.

How long does it take to grind enough for two double espressos?

I have just bought one of these, that I'm very happy with:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/...

Currys had it up at £400 a couple of weeks ago, then the price jumped up by £200 overnight. I did find it for £400 in Tesco Direct though. Excellent bit of kit.
