Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 9/10 watched this in preparation to watching the new one that is out this week.
Been a while since I watched it and forgot just how bloody good it is, initially put on the 2001 remake by tim burton and remembered what a pile of steaming pish that was.
This is one of these remakes that actually work, some of the animation is truly stunning. If the second one is as good then it will be worth a watch.

Boyhood
Filmed over a 12 year period, its about a boys life between the ages of 6 to 18. There is no real point, there is no real story and in the later scenes where he is older there is no real acting.
Pushing almost 3 hours long, with nothing but a realistic portrayal of life it should have been boring - yet it was absolutely fantastic. It is currently one of only 5 films that I have currently rated 10/10 on IMDB (the others being Goodfellas, Psycho, 12 Angry Men and The Shawshank Redemption) and I highly recommend you go and see it - its not showing at many cinemas so keep an eye out!

Ones from the last few days:
Dallas Buyers Club
One thing that pissed me off though: when they're in the motel-office they have, the car poster on the wall is of an Aventador. The film is set in the 80's!!!!! Rookie Error.
I actually paused the film and said "tell me what is wrong with this" and even the gf got it bless herDallas Buyers Club

"Jodorowski's Dune"
An amazing documentary about the best science fiction film that never got made. In 1975 a slightly crazy Chilean director wanted to make Frank Herbert's Dune into an epic sci fi film with:
Mick Jagger
Orson Wells
David Carradine
Salvador Dalí
H.R. Giger
Pink Floyd
And a load of other talented artists and musicians.
It's a brilliant documentary, with loads of interviews with Jodorowsky (who is infectiously enthusiastic about everything). Well worth a watch.

Heat
Another film that I have wanted to see for a very long time. Its a heist movie - and a very good one at that, the bank robbery that goes wrong half way into the film was brilliant and kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire duration heist. Good acting - however I didn't actually like the characters that much, for example, when Neil was in a fire-fight, I wasn't thinking "Oh I hope Neil lives" but actually thinking "Oh I hope Robert DeNiro lives".
I liked heat but annoyed me how the whole film we're hearing about "don't have any attachment you can't walk away from, leave at the first sign of heat" etc etc. and the next minute he's getting down on one knee with some bint he's just metAnother film that I have wanted to see for a very long time. And what did he do when the Heat came round the corner? Patrick Bateman said:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes on now, nice little film.
Yeah I watched that too and was surprised how good it was. Sort of forgot about it after it came out but with the new one out now I was just about to add Rise to Lovefilm when I spotted it on telly. I'd say it is probably the best Hollywood film I've seen from the last few years. Even the wife stayed awake which is a real test for any film starting after 9pm
Blue Ruin - A film about a seemingly mentally challenged guy whose parents were murdered finds out that the killer is released from prison. You can probably guess the rest. Decent thriller though.
The Raid 2 - Just as good as the first, if not better. Still contains all of the badass fights and violence, but maintains a decent storyline. Watched both films without subtitles but they're pretty easy to follow, even if I didn't have a clue what any of them were saying.

I watched both of these recently too, Blue ruin was ok, but nothing special I thought. The Raid 2 - Just as good as the first, if not better. I reckon the raid 2 was better than the first, more story and a bit more variety in the setting.
Boyhood
Critics are raving about it but from the descriptions it sounded like it might be a film for the critics and not the average audience.
It is in a way, don't expect plot twists and suspense. But it didn't feel all of its 2 hours 45 mins.
The USP is that it was filmed over 20 years with the same child and adult actors, and it is fascinating to see how they age and develop as characters. Some funny and poignant moments raise the tempo but it's a film to appreciate rather than get blown away by

Under the skin - Scarlet Johansen as a alien killing men in a film shot like a fly on the wall docu soap. 5/10 - weird (and oddly under the radar considering she's naked....not my cup of tea, but she's hollywood big time so you'd think it would get more exposure?)
Well I know what movie I'm watching next! "disturbing" is the best word for it! Actually, she has the perfect body for it too - I've always thought she looked a bit normal, if not heavy, compared to the normal movie star - works well in this as her body is used as just that " a body" and not in the least bit sexy.
Oh, and PH type fact - the other alien is blasting round Scotland in the rain on an R1 - i thought he was shiffting....turns out its jeremy mcwilliams!
5/10. 5 for bewbs 0 for the movie.
