Walking with Tombstones - Pretty good, edgy and dark, but could have used a little more violence and possibly have been a little darker. Liam Neeson is still a badass on the phone! 7/10
Was it anything like Walking with Dinosaurs?

I always worry about reviews where the reviewer can't even remember the name of the film. smile

Transformers : Age of Extinction

Enjoyed the first film as a throwback to my childhood and thought the other 2 were kind of OK in a brainless way. This one is utterly fking dreadful though. Absolutely nothing to recommend it and it's almost 3 hours long. My 10 year old son got bored after an hour and went out to play football...

Now just to engender a bit of hate, I didn't think much of The Grand Budapest Hotel 6/10 at best. I'm a Wes Anderson fan, Fantastic Mr. Fox is in my top 10 and the Royal Tenenbaums is right up there but TGBH seemed to take every Wes Anderson conceit, turn them upto 11 and stuff it into the same film. Ralph Fiennes comic turn felt self concious and indulgent, at no point did I immerse in his performance, always aware I was watching Ralph Fiennes acting quirky. Not terrible but by Andersons standards I think a bit less might be more.
These things are always subjective, but wasn't it the point that the whole thing was played for laughs? I agree wholly that it's comically over the top, but for me, that was the charm in it.

Agree. Loved Fiennes in this and thought it was a great film due to being so utterly OTT.

Moonrise Kingdom. There is a WA film I really didn't enjoy.

Anyone seen Another Earth? I've got that lined up, providing I can suspend my OCD over tides, gravitational catastrophe etc. etc.

Subjective of course but just missed the mark for me I'm afraid, one mans OTT is another mans shoved down your throat. Not that I'm looking for subtlety here and it is probably more my problem then the films but I'll make the immersion point again in that I can watch Gene Hackman hamming it up a storm in The Royal Tenebaums and don't feel jolted from the film but I never got this at all with Fiennes.

Anyway I glad you guys enjoyed it.

I had a bit of a Robert Mictchum fest over the weekend. I didn't use to like Mitchum when I was younger, he seemed like a lazy actor to me, just reading his lines. Interestly in an interview he said that this pretty much was the case, he'd turn up, hit his spot, read his lines and go home. Whatever the reason, good casting, trying harder than he makes out etc. I've grown to love many of his films. This weekend watched.

The Enemy Below - Great Saturday afternoon war film 7.5/10
Original Cape Fear - Good remake as well, both 8/10
Night of the Hunter - Scary, touching 9/10

Sin City II

Spectacular visuals, decent cast but somehow not better than the first one. One for the Eva Green fans... 8/10

Made me re-watch the original after watching this, which in turned I drew the opinion that the original IMO is head and shoulders above the sequel.

Was decent enough but tailed off a bit for me round half way through.

Watched '300, Rise of an Empire', film was alright but a high point was Eva Green with her paps out.

Another Earth then. Great idea, full of possibility but for me, it was windy & over long with too much angsty emphasis on the protagonist's state of mind. We get that she wrecked her life. I felt that it could have lost twenty minutes without detracting from the story & in respect of the second Earth, an opportunity was missed to really explore the ramifications of that, instead opting for a clumsy first contact scene. The wobbly camera was irritating too.

Not a bad film, definitely thought provoking & the theme of how life can change in an instant was well illustrated but for me, 6.5/10.

Bored the crap out of me. Virtually nothing of the other earth in the film. Try this if you want other earth type stuff- http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/upside-down-2013
Bit more love story though but good effects.

Lawless

not sure really, some good performances if a bit mumbly. I know it's based on a true story but I didn't really feel like it went anywhere. Just sort of pottered along and then finished. One thing I wasn't clear about was when forest went for revenge, what was in the bag? I thought it was something intimate because of what had happened to Maggie but just before the bridge scenes he didn't appear to know?

7/10

Watched Coherence last weekend.

If you liked Man from Earth then this would appeal to you. Basically a groups (of pretty much unknown actors) have dinner party during the arrival/passing of a comet encounter some strange reality issues. Won't say too much but it's a film that gets more interesting as you think about it throughout, and it interesting to see how each of charaters deal with the situation they find themselves in.

Deffo worth a watch 7/10 to start with (as it takes a little while to get going)

I thought it was a good idea for a film but it didn't grab me.

Hummingbird - Jason Statham as ex special forces soldier on the run from a court martial living homeless. Turns his life around and becomes an enforcer for a Chinese gang whilst wrestling with his morality and a bit of revenge thrown in.

Really enjoyed it and a good story 7.5/10
