I watched 'The Great Beauty' and loved it, 9/10
Yes, beautifully shot. I liked it, and would give it a strong 8/10.
That said, I would add that this is a film not for everyone. If you thought Lost in Translation, or Somewhere were well paced, then you'll like it.
Shots linger, and you just sit back and chill and let the story unfold.
However, the reason I say it's not for everyone, as I'm sure that for as many people that love it there will be as many that say 'Nothing really happens, and I don't like subtitles.'
Three over the last week
American Sniper - Very good as are all of Clint's films (not seen a bad one) Bradley Cooper was perfect for this, such a sad ending with the RL footage. 9/10
Taken 3 - More of the same with a twist, needed more gore and OMG! moments. 6/10
Headhunters - finally got around to watching this - Bloody brilliant, what a clever story, 9/10

The Castle of Cagliostro. What a great piece of animation, 9/10

The Theory of Everything
Didn't enjoy this as much as The Imitation Game. It is a very straightforward telling of Stephen Hawking's life from teenager to professor. Dodges controversial issues such as the alleged abuse by his second wife.
6/10
It was based upon the book by the first wife though, although I suspect that didn't want to go there anywayDidn't enjoy this as much as The Imitation Game. I've two to add some recommendations for.
Neither will turn out to be classics, but - if you're in the right frame of mind - both are rewarding for different reasons.
Last weekend I watched Enemy - I didn't know what to expect and I admit I had to watch it twice. It starts quite dark and confusing, then doesn't get much better. If you stick with it you can get sucked right in and end up going "what the fk". You might even resort to someone on the Inter-web-net telling you what it's all about. And if you can't handle unresolved endings get right off the 'bus now - it's not for you.
Jake Gyllenhaal is good for some things. Think Donnie Darko and Source Code. If you don't like those then stay well clear, but JG does a mean turn at being a confused person in a confusing situation, and while Enemy is probably not as good as either of those, it has, on it's side, a feel of a small independent that doesn't give a st what you think or make of it. So just take it as a piece of entertainment with a bit of mind screwing and you're in for a nice treat.
Don't think too hard, but I'd give it an 8/10
Now, for a good romantic night in, like me on anniversary night tonight with Mrs Beano, Chef has a bit for every body. It's not too soppy to be simply branded a chic flick - it has some great "road-trip-type-scenery" thrown into a slightly different story . Some feel good factors in abundance. No one gets shot and it's a happy ending. Can I just warn you NOT to watch on a high definition screen if you're hungry. Eat well first! Excellent cameos from Dustin Hoffmeister and Robert Get Down Boy Jr, which show some quality thought to a simple meal of excellent ingredients. I'm scared to mention it but Sofia Vergara is there - a lot. Plus that Scarlett woman. Some great bits and boobs. And the soundtrack has got some great bits and bobs, too - personally, I loved Gary Clark Jr and the Perico Hernandez version of Oye Como Va. Chef is one you definitely DON'T have to think about.
I'm giving that a solid - but bear in mind, it's one for the right time and mood - ....another solid 8/10
Please enjoy, and feel free to pop round and stab my eyes out with a blunt stick if I'm not right......

Watched The Lunchbox tonight on Netflix. Great film, well worth a watch.

Saw Whiplash last night. One of the most captivating and engrossing films I've ever watched. J.K Simmons was superb. Highly recommended even if the synopsis makes it sound dire.
Watched it last night - I enjoyed it, wife got bored.I always worry when there's a drum solo - could be a bass solo at the end of it..
