Lone Survivor quite enjoyed this better than i thought it would be a few flaws but otherwise a decent movie.

7.5/10
Agreed, watched this last night and rather enjoyed it.

Quite sombre at the end when they were showing the photos though.

Layer Cake.

I'd forgotten how much I love this film.

Cannot believe after all the hype how disappointed I was with Nightcrawler. Jake Gyllenhaal was very good but I really thought the whole film was a bunch of nothing with a crappy ending.

Going to watch City of life and death later, don't think that will be a barrel of laughs either....

The Guard. Brendon Gleeson plays a Garda Officer in the remote West Coast of Ireland who teams up with an FBI agent played by Don Cheadle to try to stop a gang of drug smugglers. It's a bit slow in places but worth sticking with. 8/10 from me.

Science Fiction isn't just hard sci-fi. Two of my fave sci-fi films are Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, two types of the one of the sub-genres, but I also like hard sci-fi like 2001.

Would you, leave your children at a moments notice, probably to never see them again, with their grandfather, when there's a shortage of food situation that you know is going to get worse as the planet is dying all because a bookcase told you to meet Michael Caine who then said you should, because he'd found a wormhole?

I love sci-fi, the original War of the worlds, The day the world stood still, 2001, 2010, Close Encounters, Alien, The Terminator, 12 monkeys, GATTACA, Contact, Capricorn One, Blade Runner, Moon, War Games, Her, Strange Days & Solaris spring to mind as being my faves. However War of the Worlds (remake), Independence Day, 2012, Matrix, Armageddon, Deep Impact, Source Code, Transcendence, Lucy, Event Horizon and their ilk are just rubbish, happy to dismiss them as they're just brain dead popcorn films. I'd be happy to bundle Interstellar into the second category if it wasn't for folk claiming it's all believable and Gentlemen Science Fiction.
Didn't he think he would be coming back? As in normally, not via a human built tesseract?

Anyway, some great SF films mentioned there. Capricorn One for me is a great example of a film that crosses several genres to make something special, love Hal's monologue from the start as well. I am in accord with most of your second choice, save fo Matrix, I think that is still brilliant.
Though from what I have read I would like a faithful english language version of Solaris.

It's certainly got some great bits in it. I just am irked by a few of the details.
I am also not a fan of Cruise. biggrin

Calvary 8.5/10

An enjoyable black comedy with some cracking performances, Brendan Gleeson and Chris O'Dowd in particular were excellent.

A space or alien theme doesn't make it Science Fiction (in the true sense). Mostly what people think of as Science Fiction are actually Thrillers, Action or Fantasy films that just happen to be set in space.

Watched Klondike, a mini series about the last big gold rush in the Yukon in 1898. Based on actual events, gripping and very good, an eye opener as to how life was back then.

Me and SWMBO saw this last night, god how we laughed, especially at the IRA man explaining the only way to infiltrate MI5.
Haven't really seen much of Brendon Gleeson, going to start looking out for his films.

The Guard is awesome, it was on FIlm4 as part of it's thriller/cop series on Saturday.

Gleeson is my favourite Irish actor.
Things I can watch again with him in them;
The films already mentioned
Lake Placid
The General
28 Days Later
In Bruges...pretty amazing since I cannot stand the other Irish fella in it.

He is also very good in an another Irish film called I Went Down. Was shown on BBC2 a few years ago. I can't remember a film where he hasn't put in a decent performance.

Finally got around to watching The imitation Game last night. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I'd heard the performances were good and the subject matter is of interest to me it's just that from the trailers, it looked a bit boring. It was anything but. There were a few things that spoilt it a little but overall, a very solid 8 out of 10.

Yup - I'd say that was about right - we watched it over the weekend as well.

'Now that we're friends', made both the wife and I burst out laughing so much that we had to rewind the next bit as we couldn't hear what was said hehe

Totally agreed - at least an easy 8 from me too.

I thought it was more 'black' than comedy to be honest, but the whole thing was really good. Believable, moving, with great characters.

What is possibly useful as a friend of mine watched this and got a different take is that the reason that the film is called 'Calvary' which is otherwise unlinked to the plot is that the story mimics the last days of Jesus.

That's obviously intentional, and with that knowledge the second half of the film has a very dark and ominous feeling. That said, this does not spoil the ending.

Was going to watch Cavalry (and definitely will) but watched Detatchment with Adrien Brody. A little like The Class in places which is unavoidable due to the subject matter, but worth a watch I thought.
