Blue Ruin. I'd say it's a arthouse film about revenge though I confess to not knowing what the revenge was about. Well-acted and shot. I'm going with a low-ish 6/10 but I think it warrants a second viewng and that may increase.
I agree.

PS It gets better the second/third time you watch it (in my opinion).
8-9/10 for me. Very well done, low budget

From memory, his father had an affair with one of the bad guys wives? Or was it is mother with one of the bad guys....anyway Revenge was around the infidelity as I recall. To be honest if you can't remember it doesn't really detract

I don't think Close Encounters, Alien, The Terminator, Capricorn One or the original War Of The Worlds are science fiction at all.
What do you think they are then? Documentaries?
A space or alien theme doesn't make it Science Fiction (in the true sense). Mostly what people think of as Science Fiction are actually Thrillers, Action or Fantasy films that just happen to be set in space.
Do what? ScFi takes an imaginary look at a time/place/tech that does not exist (that we currently know of) but shows how, if it did, things would play out having established that time/place/tech as existing within the context of the story.

Alien....set in a future where we have space travel, as yet uninvented tech and aliens is about as scfi as you can get!

Exodus: Gods and Kings

I was very apprehensive about buying this, as Ridley Scott has made some real stinkers of late, but I do have a massive soft spot for ancient historical epics.

It wasn't half bad, TBH, I did enjoy it, and the film held my attention for the 2 and a half hours running time. I am not at all 'religious', so I don't know how accurate it is compared to the Old Testament, nor was I offended (like many seem to have been) with the portrayal of God as a child.
The acting was fine, on the whole, and the sets and visuals were splendid - the latter being the main reason I bought the film, I love seeing ancient worlds realised, when done well.

We Own The Night

Joaquin Phoenix & Mark Whalberg. Set in the late '80's NYC cop's nightclub managing brother gets involved with Russian gangsters until circumstances force his hand. Not to bad although all felt a bit familiar; the only film I can think of that features a Merkur XR4Ti though.

If the science or technology is the focus of the film, then its science fiction. If it just happens to be the backdrop, then its not science fiction.

Is Red Dwarf Science Fiction, or Comedy that's set in space? What about Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure, that has time travel.

Something like say Dr Who could be described as Science Fiction or Fantasy. The episodes switch between both. Time Travel alone does not make it Science Fiction, but a time travel paradox storyline would do.

Again this is in the true sense of Science Fiction, its a blurred line.

Crikey, I just put this one on the "Bad films" thread. Nothing again to do with the religious stuff, I just though it was a really poor film. Reminded me of the recent Noah movie which was as bad if not worse. Give me The Ten Commandments anytime. smile

Age of Ultron - usual fan service. Not much behind. Trying to be a few stories at the same time. Some clues for the next one. Still enjoyable brain-out action. 7/10

Finally got around to watching Dallas Buyers Club, a sad brilliant 9/10.

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto show what acting is all about.

Heads up. Insomnia just starting on bbc1 now.

It's a film that seems to have slipped past a lot of people's radar. Great little film.

Gettin' Square.

Australian film about some fair dinkum blokes trying to make an honest buck, in between robbing, selling drugs and dealing with bent coppers!

Sam Worthington (Avatar spaz), Timothy Spall, Gary Sweet.

Avengers age of ultron. Watched it last night in IMAX, amazing better than the first for sure. Surprisingly funny and getting to know the characters a little better in their personal lives was genius. It was 2 1/2 hours long but it didn't seem like it. 9/10

The Station Agent.

Understated and whimsical, fantastic acting from Tyrion Lannister in his breakout role. Great Sunday movie.

The Homesman.

My word I thought it was good. Not laugh a minute and Tommy lee Jones playing Tommy Lee Jones. The story is essentially 3young mums loose their minds living in the harsh prairie territories. A single woman agrees to take them back east where they can be cared for better.

Some terrific performances. I hadn't heard of it before seeing in in the Sky Store so took a punt. Very glad I did.

I didn't think it was anything like as good as the first. Perhaps my expectations were too high. I might go and see it again to be sure.
