Looking at all the spoilers above has made me do a rare thing...look trough the sky box to see if I can rent Ex Machina...it's not on there, but I see films I have not heard of.

So Black Sea has been given the thumbs down.
But has anyone watched Wyrmwood:Road of the Dead or The Pyramid?
Automata is also on there.
Black Sea will frustrate you, witnessing the stupid, non-sensical decisions they make (like Prometheus), The Pyramid isn't great (although I admit that I did like it - but many would not..) and I haven't seen Wyrmwood:Road of the Dead yet.

I did quite like Stonehearst Asylum, well acted and good period sets, reminded me of one of those old 'Tales from the Vault' type short stories, but with better actors and a much larger budget.

American Sniper. Not too bad overall, but I can't see why it gained all the plaudits that it did. Cooper is pretty good but it only scratches the surface of what could have been a decent look into PTSD and its effects on the sufferer and those around him/her. In the end it came across as a stars-and-stripes flag-waving exercise.

I didn't realise Sienna Miller was his Mrs until the titles so good performance from her. I preferred The Hurt Locker but it's worth a watch. 6.5/10
kind of agree with you, the thing that attracted me to it is it's authenticity as a story (helps that it's based on real life).

I would give it a 8/10, yes not as gritty as the Hurt Locker, but still a good film.

Like a few on here, the last couple of days i have watched two A.I.-themed sci-fi films.
Firstly Ex Machina, the thinking man's movie, which is quiet and beautifully filmed and intriguing, with a reasonable twist at the end. 8/10

Then last night i watched Chappie - and despite thinking "oh, its another of this guys films set in Jo-burg" the primitive man in me soon was impressed by the CGI and the guns and the robots, and willing to overlook Huge Jackman's mullet. The Moose, a complete rip-off of ED-209, briefly reminded me of the remake of Robocop and how disappointing that was, so in comparison Chappie was a better sequel to the original robot police story.
I got annoyed with the two main criminals, who i understand are minor popstars - they even kept their same stage names for the film characters, so together with their frequent slo-mo action it just ended up like i was watching an extended video for their group. To be fair, the bloke wasnt bad, and was quite scary, but the girl couldnt act for toffee, and showed that having a "kerrrrazy" haircut and a machine gun painted pink doesnt make you interesting - it just makes you as attention whoring as Lady gaga. Still, could have been worse -could have been Bono i suppose.
It seemed to drag on a bit towards the end, with the hasty "consciousness" topic brought up (haha - wtf?!) and by the end the score had dropped to 6/10. Better than Elysium, not as good as District 9.

Good Kill

Ethan Hawk, ex F-16 pilot now assigned to killer drone strikes, unravels. Obviously done on a budget but very much worth a watch IMO 7/10

OK, last night I watched:

Jupiter Ascending - 5/10 - Very pretty but very little substance, what a waste of a (presumably) massive budget - par for the course for Hollywood these days, I fear - very hollow, instantly forgettable.

John Wick - 9/10 - Now this is more like it, a revenge action thriller with tongue set firmly in cheek, a very entertaining watch (apart from the one scene near the beginning..)

It got terrible reviews but I really enjoyed the ever-twisting and unravelling story in The Loft.

Five guys share a "pad" their wives don't know about where they can take their mistresses, until a girl is found dead in there one day. They accuse each other and the story is told partly in flashbacks and over the course of the police questioning each of them.

Marvellous. The true story of Neil Baldwin who looks at life slightly differently.
Very funny and heart warming.

Toby Jones stars.

8/10 on IMDb. If anything I'd give it a higher score.

Watched Lucy last night. Luc Besson film with Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman really should tick all the right boxes for me, but I feel it fell somewhere in between this thread and the bad films one.

The general plot is that she gets forced in to being a drugs mule, but accidentally overdoses on a drug that ends up enabling her to use a lot more of her brain power than normal. Some mediocre action scenes, a fair bit of bad science, and characters I never really connected with or even believed in.

Meh/10
This review put me off watching Lucy forever.

It sounds spectacularly bad...

Makes me worry about the new live action Ghost In the Shell film starring Scarlett Johansson

Taking zero bets on moving from Japan to USA and even changing the leads motoko kusanagi to an american name.

It deserves 9. Toby Jones is a superb actor and a proper one not just one that plays a version of their own personality. But they can get away with it because they are just "typecast" into that role. (Statham, Diaz, S L Jackson, Le Beof I'm talking about you!)

Nice touch when he chats, in character, to the real Neil Baldwin.
Jones: "Did it really happen like that?"
Baldwin: "No"

hehe

Watched "Margin Call".

A decent insight into the events that led up to the collapse of Lehman Brothers (although the name of the firm is fictional in the movie).

Hard to engage with many of the characters though but perhaps that is because the type of people who really worked in places like Lehmans weren't that engaging.

"Absolutely Everything" would indeed appear to be your thing if you couldn't stay conscious for "Ex-Machina" hehe which I watched for the 2nd time last week and still totally love it...

couldn't be two more diferent films eh....

Tracker with Ray Winstone. ( on a Freeview movie channel last night ).
Never heard of it before but sat down and really enjoyed it.
An ex Boer War fighter and widower who goes to New Zealand in 1903 and is employed to track a Maori who was suspected of murdering a soldier. As the story unfolds, all is not what it seems and Ray gives us a lesson in humanity. A real blokey ending too.
I am a movie fan and seen hundreds but this one came on unexpected, I gave it a chance and was entertained well. Its bound to be on again, give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
7/10 - perhaps an 8 if Ray had managed the Afrikaan accent a bit better.

I love Fletch, every time I watch it, it brings a smile to my face. I bought the DVD a few year's back, and it is one of the most watched.
