I watched Whiplash last night. It was excellent, I can see why Simmons got the Oscar.

Watched these two over last couple of evenings:

Chasing Mavericks

Coming of age yarn / biopic of a surfer & his mentor (Gerrard Butler). Bit plodding but saved by being set against some decent scenery, some massive waves and having a good soundtrack.

Premium Rush

Snappy nonsense about NYC cycle couriers. Jospeh Gordon-Levitt gets caught up w/ a corrupt cop chasing some money. Quite enjoyed this one, lots of manic cycling through New York, cliche characters and suitably short (did reminded me of a UK show from a few years ago about bike couriers though).

I like Premium Rush, Danny MacAskill did some of the stunts, iirc?
No idea & don't know who he is I'm afraid but it was good fun & some of the riding was pretty impressive. It's put me off converting a bike to fixed wheel though - looks fking knackering.

Predestination - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2397535

A time travelling crime film with a bit of a twist of dealing with paradoxes.

I thought it was really interesting and different. You could easily figure out what was going on before each reveal took place but it didn't matter.

Recommended!

A slightly viscous 7.8/10

In what way?

I prefer slightly odd, low budget films as they often have a better idea. There's no way Hollywood could have made such a thing like this.

Just finished watching it - quite enjoyed it - but what a paradox!

Wild Tales

Just out of DVD/Bluray - Argentinian film nominated for the Oscar for best foreign film.

This film is a 'portmanteau'. For non film geeks, this is a film made up of a number of separate short films, usually linked together.

If you remember Roald Dahl's 'Tales of the Unexpected', this is a similar tone. Six stories of between ten and forty minutes in length, starting out in a very mundane way, each involving a bizarre set of circumstances evolving from human emotions.

Each is very engaging, despite the short length, and all follow themes of anger and revenge, each with a bizarre twist you simply could not guess from the start.

Great stories, often with black comedy. highly recommended if you don't mind subtitles. 8.05/10.
Saw this at local Curzon and just loved it ; beautifully shot and laugh out loud funny in Tarantino sort of way . Brilliant film- and if somebody gave the original Jurassic Park 12 /10 then Wild Tales deserves at least 93.7 /10...
Watched this last night, really very good. A solid 8/10 from me.

God damn it. I watched this last night after sister d said this looks interesting. It was very entertaining and thought "need to recommend this!" Doubt anyone has seen this. Not pipped to the post to give the first review, but the race is already over and I'm just pulling into the carpark : (

Amy - An incredible docu/film about the truly legendary voiced Amy Winehouse. Made by the guys who the the marvellous Senna film. If you love her and her music you will known the story and you will enjoy the film. However, there isn't anything here that we didn't already know, but what a story. The early footage of her is great and the obvious love and concern from her close female friends is very apparent. Oh yes, the music...it's more about the woman than the music although it obviously plays a big part in the film, goosebumps all round when certain songs crop up.Very sad and poignant. A solid 9/10

Terminator Genisys

Ok, so technically it's a bad film I watched this weekend, BUT I did genuinely have fun, which is why I'm posting.

Pro's:
Some good references to the older films
Arny was actually pretty good
Time travel
It was just a fun movie IMO

Con's:
Some of the references were st
Acting was poor on the whole (Particularly from Jai Courtney, but what do you expect?)
Plot was convoluted
It essentially 'cancels out' all other Terminator movies (due to how the timeline is affected)... Which is fine for T3/Salvation, but its absolutely criminal to basically wipe out T1 and T2
CGI was pretty poor, it got better as the film went on, but definitely sub-par...
Action sequences dragged on for too long

6/10

We just got back from watching this. We both enjoyed it a lot. However, the thing I thought I'd like most was the worst part - Emilia Clarke. She ain't no Linda Hamilton. Linda Hamilton clearly worked out a lot before the role, and she looked the part, Emilia, as beautiful and as gorgeous to look at as she is looked too short and dare I say 'dumpy' (compared to the original Sarah Conner)

Overall, for pure entertainment value, I'd say 7 out of 10, with T2 still a near perfect 9

I enjoyed Terminator Genisys. It is not a film in its own right, more of an homage to T1 and T2. Arnie was superb, Emilia Clarke was OK (but no Linda Hamilton), and Jai Courtney was terrible.

I've yet to see a film with him in it that i thought he's been good in. He plays the same character and person in every film I've seen him in so far.

Ghostbusters - loved it ever since I was a child (even if I was too scared to watch a lot of it then) and love it now, especially as I can appreciate the sheer volume of adult jokes in it, which is pretty much anything Bill Murray says. Great script, great directing, great cast, great chemistry, great everything really. One of the very few films I'd easily give a 10/10

I thought he was acceptable in Jack Reacher..... Not an overly testing role granted....

Great, great film. Saw it seven times when it first came out ('84?), loved it ever since. Have just introduced my 5 year old son to it (I forgot about the relatively prolific use of 'st' but no harm done) and he loves it also.

Ghostbusters2 - less good, but watchable.
