is there an ideal time to advance book a hotel?

ive booked a flight for late may 2013 into los angeles , wondered if anyone has any experiance of how the hotel prices may vary between now and then

money isnt making much in the bank so if we can save a few £ booking now vs last minute then i would

I tend to to book as soon as I know I'm going somewhere. I use booking.com, as it's mostly free cancellation. I keep a regular eye on the prices, and then cancel & rebook if it's worth it. Did that in Chicago this year. The hotel we booked for 3 nights for $700 dropped by $100 for the same room.
