Graham, one of the SL boys has just gone EPS on his hillclimb car, each event he raves about it just a little bit more!

I thought like others that EPS was for “poofs” when I built my Mk 2. However after going to one particular rally venue where there are endless small straits and 90 lefts and rights, my shoulders started to ache !
As I am not in my 20’s anymore!! I decided to fit one of Roger Hicks superb EPS systems to my Mk 2, blimy what a difference. It still has all the same feel as before, just lighter, REALLY well worth it especially is you run a lot of castor and wide slicks.

I would say that on a road car with normal 185 ish tyres you would not need it, but it is Very adjustable to suit .

I thought all those that drive in motorsport were all very macho but now I know I'm wrong - perhaps they're just "butch"

Does the electrical system need 'beefing' up in any way to cope with the additional load?

My son has a 1.6 Astra which I think has electric power steering, and when turning the steering at parking speeds (in the dark with headlights on), the load on the electrical system is quite noticeable. Unless there is some kind of fault with it of course.

I wouldn't imagin the load was that great - it's just an electric motor after all.

Of course I'm used to driving a 70's car where I can hear the tickover revs drop if I put my foot on the brake pedal vs. hand brake!

I don't except your red card....any thing that helps me hold on to the back end has got to be a bonus. High ratio rack, LSD to be fitted as well. The power steering is adjustable or you turn it off altogether, it all fits behind the plastic cowling, so it's out of sight.

I stand by my red card.

I don't understand why anyone would want to bugger around with one of the great things about the car, the steering and steering feel. EPS robs steering feel, and it's not as if it's needed. I had a works 2.2 rack on mine, and yes your forearms knew about it when parking the thing, but it's not a shopping car and once on the move it was shear perfection.

It weighs under a tonne, why on earth do you think you need PS! If anything, wrecking the precision of it's steering means, you'll have less chance of controlling it, not more.

The other half also drives the Sunbeam, and got to keep her happy. I have friends and family that are involved in rallying over in Ireland. All the cars they have prepped in the last few years have power steering.

The car can be returned to standard at any time......!!

In my experience, EPS Does Not rob any steering feel at all, maybe you should try a car with one fitted, you will be surprised smile
I agree, on normal none too wide road tyres, its not needed, but when you run wider slicks etc, it is!
