New Infiniti to be built in the UK
Discussion
With the creation of 1000 jobs (all be it in Sunderland) and investment of £250million.
Got to be good news?

Looks like Britain is leading the way in Electric/Hybrid car manufacture, as this car will be based on a shared platform with Mercedes the future looks bright for car manufacturing in Blighty.
It does appear to be named after a piss tube though - Etherea? Really?
(do we allow TG links on PH?)

The Sunderland plant has finite capacity.
R4 this morning were reporting that 'other' Nissan production would be shifted elsewhere in Europe to make room for the Infiniti at Sunderland.
Net result = no new jobs.
Not quite true. There was another new model in the pipeline which would have created more jobs and production of this has now been moved elsewhere to make room for infiniti.R4 this morning were reporting that 'other' Nissan production would be shifted elsewhere in Europe to make room for the Infiniti at Sunderland.

There'll be new jobs, existing jobs safeguarded and more job security for the future.

Local press reported 50 new jobs net but the bigger benefit is the diversification element with moving into a more quality car market, it was reported that it will help provide a cushion by producing for different markets. Plus it doesn't hurt to move the whole supply chain into more luxury cars, might encourage other models or even manufacturers in the future.R4 this morning were reporting that 'other' Nissan production would be shifted elsewhere in Europe to make room for the Infiniti at Sunderland.

I bought an Infiniti and well, I like it.
I'd certainly buy another, even if Vauxhall etc. make cheaper & faster alternatives.
On a pedantic note: I lived in Sunderland as a student and think the car manufacturing plant is actually in Washington, which is near but not actually in Sunderland.

Sounds like they must have bought that name for 50p from Lotus, who had otherwise planned to use it on their next non-existent sports car.Fantic SuperT said:

On an even more pedantic note, Obviously you didn't do local geography then!I'd certainly buy another, even if Vauxhall etc. make cheaper & faster alternatives.

Washington is part of the city of sunderland, it's as much part of sunderland as Roker and Hendon are, despite having a Newcastle postcode. It is simply a district, not a stand alone town anymore.
