Hi all, has anyone on here done this? I'm looking to go over (drive or public transport?) and camp out next year and hopefully watch a stage of the TDF. Thinking that if I can book a campsite now before they are all full it might be worth a shot.

It depends on where you want to watch, in the mountains it will be busy but you will find that they don't take reservations.
Nothing wrong with a half hour drive to the route. It's passing by us this year for the 4th time.

Watch a stage? You mean stand by the side of the road while the promo vehicles go past then the riders then the team cars? Head for the hills, at least they go slower there! French towns just about close down if the tour is passing through, so arrive early.

I have done this several times in the alps. Even on the climbs they ar riding very fast so you only se a glimps of the riders. The best way of describing it is like going to F1 and only being able to see 1 of the 60 laps.
