Heading over with SWMBO for a couple of nights next July (yes, I know that's a long way off!) but I really have no idea where the best place to stay would be - neither of us smoke so the quality of nearby coffee shops is not really an issue biggrin

Somewhere central-ish I guess but other than that, I really have no idea - is Leidseplein a good area to be looking to stay?

http://www.hotelnottinghill.nl/en/ is nice - handy for tram stops for easy access to the rest of the town and the Roots restaurant just across the bridge is interesting and good.

"The Golden Tulip Hotel" Amsterdam Central, 500mtrs from the Central Station and right in the heart of everything, underground car parking right outside.

Radiation blue for me. Get free room upgrade with Amex, not too far from station or the interesting parts. Plus a nice Coffe shop opposite if you have trouble sleeping.

Its a lovely area, lots of bars restaurants etc nearby and a few nightclubs, comedy clubs, jazz clubs aswell iirc and vondelpark is nearby which will be stunning in July.

If you dont smoke and im guessing the RLD is not on your to do list then i personally would stay somewhere like Leidseplein and invest in a weekly tram ticket its very easy to get around by tram

also as its so far in advance you might want to look into apartments or something abit different like a house boat
