We are landing in Los Angeles on march 8 for a 2 week holiday. We are really hoping to be able to get hold of a ford mustang or similar ( not a Chrysler Sebring!)

We don't want to spend silly money but we don't want a crap box either. Other than the usual suspects, are there any decent hire companies I should consider? Also knowing which to avoid would be useful.

Thanks in advance!!

Different state but I hired one in Florida. Our two standard sized suitcases wouldn't fit in the boot and we had to put them in the back seat. It may be worth remembering that. The boot space is shocking. We hired ours through Avis's Uk website and got a cracking deal.

Just get a Camaro from Hertz. You won't regret it driving

We had similar, requested a Mustang, got a free "upgrade" to a Sebring convertible. Probably would've struggled with cases in the Mustang but would've been so much cooler. The Sebring was dull and slow.

Are you old enough to rent from Hertz adrenalin?
If your options are limited to V6 they're all pretty similar. Trunk aperture on Camaro is a lot smaller than Mustang. Volume is more or less the same.
If there are more than 2 of you and you are planning on doing some miles, neither of these are kind to rear seat passengers.

Take a look at www.uscarhire.co.uk - they are very good value and some Mustang options available.

I was told this when I did my 3500 mile Mustang road trip. Mrs Muppet took a suitcase, I used a rucksack. Both fitted in to the boot just fine with enough clothes for three weeks, plus enough spare room for a crate of bottles of water (Death Valley paranoia), cool bag full of food, presents (cowboy boots and arrows take up quite a bit of room) and our big winter coats too.

The boot opening isn't a friendly shape, but the actual volume inside is big enough. The same luggage totally filled the boot of Mrs Muppet's Civic, and thats a boring sensible hatchback.

I loved the Mustang. I really must get around to doing a thread on the trip.

Id be interested in reading that if you do publish a blog, captain muppet. We are going from LA to Vegas to San Diego, up to San Francisco and back down the pacific coast. A lot of driving but should be fun and the main reason I want a cool car to do it in.

I had one in Vegas and although nice to look at it drives like a boat and has maybe the worst autobox I've used. As above I'd get the Camaro.

In the past I rented a mustang from Enterprise at LAX, I had simply specced "convertible" on the booking, they guy asked me to choose from what they had on the lot. There was a load of sebrings and a couple of mustang rag tops. Chose the mustang, just the V6 mind you.
It was a struggle getting the luggage, including pushchair & car seat in, but we made it...

the mustang isn't really seen as anything special in the states, it's what students & teachers drive

Every time I rent a car in SF there is a row of Corvettes to hire, boot big enough in one of those?

Mrs C and I did this about 7 years ago when the 'new' retro Mustang had just come out. Rented through Hertz and requested a Mustang rather than anything else. Arrived at San Francisco and a Mustang with 11 miles on the clock was waiting for us!

I rented a Dodge Challenger from the Hertz Adrenaline collection a couple years ago. Really good fun with a fat V8, and the boot seemed big enough for two of us.

That was from Hertz at LAX, no problems.

I have hired a number of times in the US and have found Hertz to be excellent - the last time was in October and from memory you can specify a Mustang which is what we did because on a previous trips with Alamo we ended up with a Sebring which was like driving a blancmange. Several years ago we were offered a Shelby for an extra £150 which was great fun.

Hard cases don't fit into the boot. The actual size wasn't terrible but the opening was tiny.
We'd booked a Mustang but upgraded at LAX. After seeing loads of Challengers around I wished I'd gone for that instead. Having said that the Camaro was fun to tool about in.

If you are flying with Virgin you get 50% discount off Hertz.

Avis is another option to consider as you can specify a Mustang. If you do book through Avis, use my company's discount code (ping me an email for details but contracts are allowed to use it so you don't have to be an employee)

Mustang 'drives like a boat' compared to a Camaro?
You've been huffing paint.

I thought they were both dire and boat like, except the Camaro looks much cooler.

When we went, I just booked a "compact" style car, then upgraded upon arrival when I was asked if i'd like a convertible. I agreed to the upgrade on the proviso it was a mustang over a sebring.

Cheapest hire experience ive had for the states is the voucher system operated by carhireagency.com. Also prices with the full waivers in so you don't have any of that rip-off nonsense upon arrival

More deluded rambling. Well done.
