Gatwick airport hotel recommendation
Discussion
Used the Holiday Inn Worth over Christmas, largely by chance as it came up as a good deal (no more than parking only in fact!) - really nice, clean, modern room and pleasant, attentive staff - wasn't so pleased they left my car in gear after moving it, but other than that it was top notch, particularly given it didn't cost much!
I've used a few as the OH used to work in the hotel trade:
Sofitel, North Terminal
+ Very nice ambience, convenient (on the other side of the road to the terminal)
- £££££ for rooms and £££££ for food. We stayed before we flew out to get married. My OH suggested we have a Chinese for two from the restaurant in the hotel. After totting up that it would be over £70, I steered her towards the bar to eat there...
Crowne Plaza, Gatwick
+ Nice surroundings, decent food (for what it is) Less riff-raff than other places
- Tiny room (smaller than Holiday Inn) Unjustifiably expensive than other chains in the area, courtesy bus to terminal took ages.
Holiday Inn, Gatwick
+ Good rates, nice rooms, decent bar and food, good value parking, quick and efficient courtesy bus
- Often busy, not the newest of places.
I'd by far and away recommend the Holiday Inn. It's a bed for the night and parking at the end of the day and it does the job. I've never had trouble leaving the motor there and in September, it worked out £10 more to stay over and park than just to park at Gatwick itself.

Premier Inn just opened a new hotel right beside the Sofitel last month.

As its new its rather nice at the moment. For the first few weeks it was drawing in just around 2 dozen people a night! (for a 600+ room hotel).
I've known of a few people booking there at £19 a night. They have a car park share agreement with Sofitel, no idea of cost though.

What time is your flight?
I often have to fly out at 5.50am from there. I take the last train to Gatwick and use the Yotel for 4 hours (minimum booking time) which gives you somewhere to put your head down and get a shower in the morning. I'm usually flying back the same day so not bothered about early start/lack of sleep etc.
Edit - if I'm flying long haul, I'll quite often use the Hilton at north terminal. I do get to go into the lounge there which has free booze due to my credit card though, not sure I'd pay full whack for it.

I've stayed at the Sofitel quite a bit and I'd recommend it. The restaurants are quite reasonable, and the cocktail bar's nice too. You can do a quick check out in the morning and I've always slept well in the rooms there as all the ones I've stayed in have been high up above the lobby rather than facing roads and the airport. Plus when you wake up in the morning you're already in the airport
