Hi all,

Needed to get a new radiator or have my existing one re-cored........someone on here sugguested getting an alloy one as they perform better, look nicer and are significantly lighter.

Through the wonders of the web I came across Aaron Radiators in London.........Gavin & Gerald over at Aaron Radiators are top guys, provided lots of advice and I am now the proud owner of a brand new alloy radiator for my Chimaera for less than £300 delivered.

I personally think thats a great deal so wanted to share with you all www.aaronradiator.co.uk

I spoke with Gerald at a South London car show last summer.

He was displaying a selection of rads & coolers on his stand, so I had a good look at his work.

I really couldn't fault what I saw, lovely welds & solid bracketry.

I've always been a fan of a decent re-core to be honest, but when Gerald told me one of his new ally rads for my Chimaera was £300 delivered, I had to re-think.

When my rad eventually gives out it's Aaron Radiators for me, high quality & a bargain price dont normally go hand in hand but this looks like it could be a rare exception.

Wasn't the consesus about ally rads that they tend to be too efficient for our cars and so over cool? Will higher temp thermostats fix that?

Are alloy rads more efficient? My understanding is no, so you shouldn't need to make any other changes.

Alloy rads are lighter and look nice (not that you can see much when fitted with both fans in the way)

I've never understood why people claim that radiators "over cool" ... the thermostat is there to regulate the water flow through the block (typically opening at a water temperature of 82 degrees as standard or 74 degrees if you get the lower temp stat) and hence regulating the temperature of the block - so if the thermostat is doing its job correctly then it doesn't matter how much additional cooling the radiator has in excess of the minimum required.

I *SUSPECT* what they are referring to is when you are actually running at speed there's more than enough airflow through the engine bay to keep the engine cool - I had an almost completely blocked rad when I bought my Chim and it would still run cold (a needle width over the blue) at motorway speeds but boil in a couple of minutes in traffic. After fixing the radiator she still runs cold at motorway speeds (the stat even closes!) but obviously now cools when in traffic - I do however want to get *MORE* cooling in there for hot summers days when stuck in heavy traffic so I'm looking at fitting the later cowlings (and Tuscan fans) rather than the wimpy original fans (which in my car are nearly 20 years old) and no cowlings...

A Caution. I had an alloy rad made years back, before they were readily available, and it was quite expensive. Made by a reputable and experienced outfit who copied my existing rad as a template. Unfortunately it didn't last long before leaking.

I now have a RadTec replacement, which I haven't yet fitted I'll admit, but having spoken to the manufacturer I was assured that these were designed specifically for the TVR to avoid leaks. The fact that he described exactly what would fail if his "tweaks" were not used, and that the failures described exactly what HAD failed on mine, was reassuring. I'm not going to give away his trade secrets on an open forum but if the manufacturers of your rad are not aware of the Chimarea's foibles you may find the rad isn't quite such a bargain. I hope I'm wrong, so please post back in a few months!

How come less than £300? list prices start at £346 when you add delivery and the dreaded VAT.
