I will be there for 3 nights at the beginning of April. Do I just trust tripadvisor/etc reviews or has anyone here got a recent recommendation?

I don't want (= can't afford) Hilton levels of opulence, but don't want to stay somewhere squalid.

God it was a long time ago, 2001 in fact, but the Worldfield Convention Hotel on the cross roads of Hong Chow Lui and Hong Mai Lui was ok, not downtown silly prices but clean and safe. Not sure about the road name spellings any longer!

I've stopped in a few diiferent hotels in Shanghai.
Sort of depends where you want to be really, for example right in the city centre hussle and bussle you have the Raddison Blue hotel. I stayed here in 2008 and although it is a bit pricey the hotel is of good quality standards.
The location means you can fall out of the door in to the city centre right next to the main shopping street of Nanjing Xi Lu and also People's Square metro station.

If you want the other side of the river (PuDong) then The Supreme Hotel is a cheaper option, nicely situated within easy walking distance of the shopping areas and metro stations.

Thanks both. Will check those out this weekend. I do want to be somewhere fairly 'bustly' and not some dead quiet backwater.

Also did some Googling this lunchtime and it seems that, wherever I stay, I'll need to unplug the phone at night.

I can't recommend one to use but I can recommend one not to use (but not sure if that comes under naming and shaming ?)

Search my username on Trip Advisor and you'll find my review from October.....

French quarter is quite nice, I stayed in a place that owned the entire block and had big gardens (very unusual for central SH), but can't remember the name now, sorry.

Although been to Shanghai a few times I've stayed with my brother so not needed a hotel. This place has a restaurant, which is good, so the hotel may be worth checking out.
