Clutch change for my S3 soon. Can someone please point me towards a new gearbox mount?

Thanks

Think this is the little chappie you need.

I've just bought this one, twice the price but will hopefully stop the gear lever dancing around so much?

Now the weather has eased off a bit must get around to fitting it wink

Thanks Mike. I'll probably go for the more expensive one, as I don't expect to ever change it again!!

I may be mistaken (happens all the time) but If you look at the first link that Phillpot posted the seller mentions they also supply the harder mount (70 shore?) which appears under their 'other items' to only be £1 more expensive.

Please have a look for yourselves but that's the way I see it.

The 70 shore seems to transmit more vibration judging by the blurriness of the picture wink

That's a starting price, not "buy it now".

You may be lucky and get it for that!

Mike (Philpott), my gearbox mount has just arrived, and to be honest, I am slightly surprised. I went for the 70 shore item, which I assumed would be like firm rubber but when they described it as "having slightly more give than wood" they weren't joking! It is rigid!!

Is the mount that you have bought the same?

Not got around to fitting it yet Graham but, yes, it is very hard rubber, hurts if I try and dig a thumb nail into it!

Guess there's a lot of weight, force, torque, power etc. down there and that and the two engine mounts are all that hold it all together?

Hi Guys,
Did any of you get around to actually fitting one of these gearbox mounts?

Are compatible?
Do they fit?

Is the harder "competition" (shore 70) OK or is the standard mount a better option?

questions, questions, questions!

I bought the harder mount but didn't fit it in the end, as wasn't a direct swap.

Let me know if you are interested as it is gathering dust in my garage.

Hi Sandgrounder,
Thanks but,I think I will look around for a mount that is a direct replacement, I have enough fettling to do already without throwing in more work.
What did you replace yours with in the end?

when the engine and gearbox were removed (to do the clutch), the gearbox mount looked ok, but the engine mounts were changed. This cured the bouncing gearstick problem, Happy days!

Like you, if it had been a straight swap, it would have gone in.

Hi Sandgrounder,
Interesting that the engine mounts made that much difference to the gear lever "bounce".
Did you use the "standard" Ford Capri type engine mounts round (75mm) and approx. 50mm thick.
Those mounts look very much like the mounts currently fitted to my car although mine are a little thinner at 45-47mm I am assuming that they have compressed over time.

Hi Mike,

I used Heavy Duty mounts. Can't remember where I got them from, but I do remember that Glenrobbo used the same items.

Yep, 50 mm thick Capri heavy duty engine mounts, supplied by Burton Performance.
I'm currently at my sister's in Essex, so I can't dig out the part no's for you, but Burton are very helpful, reasonable prices & can send them by return post.

Changing them is a bit of a PITA though.
You WILL need a 17mm flex-head ratchet combination spanner though.
And a very large vocabulary of swear words. curse
I also made a couple of slotted 2.5 mm thick shims to get a little bit more ground clearance for the exhaust. ( The S1 is renowned for this problem. )
Plenty of threads on changing the engine mounts if you search.
HTH,
Glen smile

Thanks for all the info guys,
I have no trouble getting the mounts off and on as the engine and gearbox are currently on the floor while the chassis is off have the complete refurb job.
I was happy when I did not know what the iron moth had chewed out of the chassis but once I took the body off there was no way it was going back together without some major surgery on the chassis (and not just outriggers!).
I had a good look at my mounts today and they are really well shot,
I will go with the 50mm Mounts. heavy duty or otherwise.

I may as well replace everything that is visible while the thing is apart.

Regards
