hope not, the LHC already uses most of the world's supply liquid helium - us NMR guys will not have functioning magnets if they made a bigger on lol

CERN are already looking at a sucessor to the LHC, with 3x the length

<tired old joke>What's so special about an even larger hadron? I get e-mails in my Inbox all the time telliing me how easy it is to get one.</tired old joke>

I'll bet the scientific community wish they'd thought up some other word to call hadrons. It doesn't help that the word comes from the Greek for "large/massive".

Has something good come of the first one then? Do we need a bigger one to improve our lives? or is someone just securing future funding? Sorry if im sounding obtuse.
Much "pie in the sky" science doesn't have immediately obvious benefits.

Look at research into Lasers - could anyone have predicted the massive number of everyday applications such an invention now has in our lives.

Lasers are used in everything from surgical procedures, dental work, multimedia, architecture, entertainment, communication.....and the list goes on. In the future they may even be used for energy production (laser ignition fusion).

The fundamental science has to be done - the applications may come much later, but they usually do come.

Questioning the value of CERN on the internet of all places makes my irony gland hurt.

because pure research and fundamental understanding of our universe/physics has never lead to any real world impact or improvement .. :/
