So I have signed up and paid for a Tough Mudder event in September.

It's a 12 mile assault course involving ice cold water, being electrocuted, big walls, rope ladders etc.

At present I can barely run to the end of the street.

Oh dear oh dear

You'll be fine. I did tough guy a couple years back with no training and i could barely run a few hundred metres without stopping. You won't be fast but you can finish it. Its all in your mind!

I looked at this the other day, needless to say I'm not doing it.

You've signed up to one of the most fun events I've ever done. You'll love it.

For training, I recommend a kind of random training routine. So, start by running 1km, then go do a main compound exercise(squats/deadlift/Military press), run another 1km, go do some press ups, run another 1km, go do another compound exercise, run another 1km...you get the idea.

I did it in 2 hours 15. I could easily have broke 2 hours but ended up helping a few folk along the way. Camaraderie is a strong point during TM.

I echo the comments above. You will love it!
If you think this is hard, check out the Spartan events...now that's tough!

If you want a slightly easier one, check out The Major Series. Same sort of thing but not as extreme.

Get training outdoors, but the biggest piece of advice I can give is to get offroad shoes. I used to wear old trainers, however with no grip you slide all over the place like bambi on ice. Not a good look and take forever...a pair of Solomons or the like will make a world of difference.

Good luck!

I straddle to run up the street, never mind a km inbetween lifts!

I did the Scotland one last year,
When I signed up, I'd be blowing out my arse in less than a half mile run.

I took up rugby again and the fitness came along, but I still ate lots of pizza!

It's not a race, it's mental grit and teamwork.

Take up a sport and fitness will follow! You have lots of time left!

I'm looking at the Yorkshire one as well, how far is it exactly as the general info for Tough Mudders just says 16-19km?

And is anyone looking for another member of their team, thought it'd be better than going round on my own smile.

After seeing this thread, I'm now considering it! I'm thinking the Yorkshire event and am in the process of trying to recruit some of my mates to join in.

Yajeed, if you need an extra, let me know and ill join your team. Looks like you're also in Cambridgeshire so can pick me up on your way up the A1 as well. biggrin.

No problem, you're welcome to join my team (currently of one!). Assuming I can actually get others to join in of course!

These events are great! I did two spartan races last year. Planning 3 this year. Would be worth doing an event of similar nature but less distance before hand to see what areas of fitness may be your down fall?

Training wise the guys above are spot on, as mixed and diverse as possible. Lots of people who take part are cross fit people. Runners do well naturally due to distance. Any help I can be with training or event advice ask away smile

I'm doing one of these http://www.brutalrun.co.uk/ next month, done a bit of traing, but I'm far from being fit (42, likes a beer & fast food) but I've got a secret weapon, I'm doing it with my 48kg Alaskan Malamute, so when I get knackered after the first 5k he can just drag me to the finish line biggrin

I have joined the local council swimming pool so can hit that a few times a week, plus my regular weight training/running.

Can wait now!

All the brutal runs seem to be south of England, any near the East Midlands?

Remember to keep your mouth firmly closed while swimming or god knows what you'll swallow hehe

OK, so if anyone fancies doing the Yorkshire Tough Mudder this year and be part of a team, let me know.

I've got a handful of people who want to do it, and I'm certainly going to. I'm not mega fit (think training 3 times a week plus a bit of cycling and running) so I won't be breaking any course records but hope not to be last either (and yes, I know - it's not a race). smile

Be worse than what you'd swallow in the tough mudder swamp!
