Hi all,

Just been looking at properties for our first buy, one was a Bellway 'new' house which is about 6 years old. It has a boiler in the kitchen, Honeywell controller which I assume controls the heating and hot water as there is also a 'pressurised' system upstairs in the airing cupboard (looked like a modern immersion tank to me)

Would my current Nest work with this system for the heating? We currently have a combi.

Thanks

What's the deal with the Tado extension box for the V2 thermostat anyway? They've told me I need one but didn't explain why - I presumed that the new thermostat just replaced the old version and there may also be a replacement control box to fit next to the boiler.

The extension box is the control box as before. Just they are selling the thermostat similarly to nest - standalone and (presumably) sitting where your thermostat did before...

I agree, it's a bit weird! You need the extension if you want hot water control.

Call them. They told me that too initially, seems to be a bit of confusion with the new kit. See my post above, hopefully yours will be the same.

My controller is set to "always on" for the heating and I'm still using the timer for the hot water. The TADO just replaced the basic thermostat.
I think this is what I want. So it just replaced the thermostat with no other boxes attached to wiring of boiler/heater?
Correct, and it didn't need a power feed either as it has batteries.
Prefer something that is wired as I have the wiring already there. Never mind. How long do the batteries last?

Tado told me that they last at least 2 years, probably more - we'll see smile

Thats what the extension box is for. Then you can put the thermostat whereever you like.

My current control box for v1 is in my airing cupboard, but my wireless thermostat is on a random wall downstairs.

My take on this is 75%+ of users in hte UK will want the extension box. Otherwise I might as well just by a dumb wifi thermostat IMO.

Me again, how would I replace one of these with a Nest? Would I Have to have the USB power going down the wall?

Yes, which is why I've gone with a TADO for the next 12 months.

Annoying, only had it a few months and have now decided to buy somewhere! Really like the Nest too.

I had a similar Thermostat and replaced it with a Nest. I pulled the cable back into the electrical cupboard and had the heatlink connected up in there. I then had a the nest installed in my lounge on a wall that backs into the electrical cupboard and hard wired it to the heat link.

If you're happy with where the thermostat is at the moment then have the heatlink installed next to the boiler and connect the Nest with the existing thermostat cable.

You could also get the stand for the Nest and have it located on a desk or bookcase etc. and powered by USB. IMO they shouldn't have offered the option of connecting the Nest with a USB cable trailing down the wall.

When I had mine installed they replaced the thermostat with the nest and its powered by the original wires.

Perfectly possible, power the Nest from the heatlink box using the existing thermostat wiring. No need for the USB cable/plug then.

I'm a bit confused as to why you need the heat-link as well as the wires to the boiler but it sounds possible at least!

Annoyingly the stat is behind the front door currently, but I don't want to be left with a hole in the wall really. I'd also like it to be on the wall, as it looks better than on the stand like I have it now.

The heat-link is providing an independent interface between the boiler and the NEST. The boiler/NEST don't talk natively, so there is an interface box inbetween.

This allows NEST to develop one NEST controller, and then adjust the (relatively cheap) interface box to cope with various heating systems).

also I suspect your current system is 240v, and the NEST is expecting 5v or similar.

Is there a preference over nest, tado etc? I've got that rubbish Honeywall thermostat, and a air source pump (which comes with a cupboard of gizmos including a timer etc)

I tried to talk to one of them online and got told "just a sec" kept the tab open for 30 minutes and got bored!

I'd be great to be able to have the house ticking over during the day and get warm when I set off, so I come home to a warm house!

Would any/all of these be suitable for oil powered boilers?

I just need something that I can turn the heating on while I'm away, so was thinking of Nest. However if something is better with an interface that allows in person control of the heating and the hot water as well as the wifi aspect I'm happy to give it a go? -not into this monthly paying business though!

Hmm, fairly major issue with TADO.

Put the girlfriend on the system so it knows when she's home etc, only one issue. She can login and see if I'm home or not!

"Yes dear, I'm working hard at home tonight" when you're really down the pub suddenly got a lot more of a problem! hehe
