According to the Times, the German president has suggested English should be the common language of the EU.

Wonder how the French will react

It's the common language of Europe. The EU is a different matter. The French have had hissy fits every time someone has dared to suggest that English is a more sensible choice than French.

This speaks of something a bit wider though - the Germans wouldn't have done this unless they have become a bit fed up with the direction France wants to take the EU. Faced with a choice between France's vision of a socialist superstate and the UK's vision of a loose free market with very few ties beyond that, Germany is trying to figure out what they want.

I think that this indicates that they are starting to move away from France, even if they're not moving towards us.

The Germans know that anyone who wants to do business in China, India or South America (pretty much everywhere actually) learns English, not French or German. The Germans, being a practical nation wish to benefit from this. The French being an arrogant nation would prefer to cut their own nose off than look for advantages for France.
