Just a nosey question borne of curiosity, but wondered if anyone might know why there was a police convoy travelling north on the M1 this lunchtime?

It came past me as I was approaching J29 (NE Derbyshire) at around 12.40pm and comprised one lead police car then 2 blue police/prison(?) trucks - not vans but sizeable enough to be described as lorries/trucks - flanked by 4 Police BMW X5s all with blue lights flashing and one displaying a 'Keep Back' sign in the rear window. At least one of the cars had 'City of London Police' badging.

Just wondered if there was a major, big name (or maybe secret?) trial or transfer of prisoners today, esp. given the distance from London, given the badging.

Wasn't a money or bullion run to the Royal mint in Leeds was it? Or were the trucks definitely prison vehicles.

Hadn't thought of that but it sounds very possible - I'd assumed Prison Service but maybe not. Both medium sized trucks/lorries and a uniform dark blue in colour - I didn't spot any badgig but they were part covered by the flanking vehicles.

Also wtf was going on over the M40 to be worth so much grief...I appreciate there may well be something on the A404 worthy of the total snafu and chaos but wtf anyway!

ETA current details so OK got the picture:

Latest
The M40 is currently closed at Junction 4 as police attend a man on the wrong side of the barrier at the bridge by Cressex Road.
There are long delays between J2 A355 (Beaconsfield) and J4 A404 / A4010 Handy Cross, as the M40 is closed in both directions.
The incident is causing gridlock on the roads around High Wycombe and Marlow.

5:56pm
The BFP is concluding its live blog on this incident - but we will bring you an update as and when we receive further information from Thames Valley Police.

I quite often see them pull into the back of the BoE while walking to my office, it's quite interesting to see the police scoot in really quickly, armed police jump out and secure the area while the van goes in.

Good old PH, mystery solved!

Good job I didn't try to flag them down for a loan then, I suppose.

You want to try that with a nuclear run (well, not the loan part!), things might get a bit shooty!

Does that mean - as I'd hope - that the nuclear facilities are staffed with armed police/the army? One of my father's arguments against nuclear energy is the risk of terrorist attacks/thefts. I can't imagine that any responsible govt. (ah well, what am I saying!) would leave plants so vulnerable and hope they are well protected.

Reminds me of Mark Thomas and the nuclear train. Spin forward to 7:30 if you don't like his stand-up.

No idea if that's still valid.
