Hmm...going to have to admit something in public here that not even my closest friends know about....I have a model railway in my loft!!

Anyway, whilst I keep the loft clean (I even take the vac up there), I have noticed some tiny creatures that are about the size of a spec of dust, white/light beige in colour crawling over the trains. Closer inspection has found them to be on the track & other places. Now there are not hundreds of them, just the odd two or three crawling around the trains everytime I go up there.

What could they be? Dust mites, mould mites, bird mites? (I do get birds nesting in the eves but they dont come into the loft itself). The house is a relatively modern one (1994) and the loft area is very clean unlike some old terraces.

Any ideas how to kill them? Will flyspray work? Can you buy mite killer? I dont want something that leaves a residue on the layout and I dont want to try one of those smoke bombs either as I should imagine they will leave some form of residue too! I thought they may die during the recent cold spell as the loft suffers from the extremes of temperature but they are still here & have been for around 3 months now. They are not present anywhere else in the house, just the loft.

HELP! I want rid of the damn things!!

House flea sprays kill all sorts of other critters (eg vetkem acclaim which you can buy online from eg Boots) that may be worth a go and it shouldn't stain or damage your models.

I think you should get rid of the train set. Only joking. Just buy a spray, they work.

Last time I have a 6 legged critter problem I phoned Bob http://www.pestcontroldirect.co.uk/

Who sold me some stuff that I sprayed everywhere and did the trick. (But thinking about it that was probably pushing 10 years ago now! yikes )

may be worth doing a bit more investigation. We had a birdmite issue last year.
Got Rentokil out and they did their thing, spraying round the loft and other rooms letting smoke bombs off. He insisted that the only evidence of birds in the house was a small crack in one of the loft walls so patched that up.
None of this worked at all. Anyway after many arguments with them I got all my money back.
Phoned another company and over the phone he said what the problem would be. Came round and started tearing the soffits out to reveal all. He filled a wheelie bin with birds nests/ eggs/ chicks/ dead birds then sprayed around to kill off anything crawlie that was left. Not seen another bug since.
