Was just popping out with the wife earlier to get some indian and as we got to the main road, we encountered a cat that had just been hit in the road. The car that hit him sped off frown

Poor bugger was twitching on the floor but was dead in less than 30 seconds. Lots of blood.

Grabbed a couple of bin bags and another chap moved him to the side of the road. I wrapped him up in 2 bin bags and we knocked on a few doors but noone knew him.

I've since taken him home and he's in the garage at the moment. I'm a bit unsure what to do!

Will a vet take him? He could possibly be microchipped but had no tags etc.

There is a volunteer run animal hospital locally, I will see if they will take him tomorrow. I couldn;t just leave his body lying at the side of the road, although my friend thinks I should have?

Any ideas?

It would be kind to see if it was microchipped. I would imagine you'd get a scan for free.

You will likely have to pay disposal at a vets if you leave it with them. TBH, there's next to naff all you can do apart from that. Double bag and in with the household rubbish.

Unless you are feeling ceremonial, then bury with full honours in the back garden, including passasges from the hallowed haynes manual (that may just be us) and a slab on top to stop foxy having a go in the night.

Not nice, at least it was quick.

I'll maybe see if the local animal hospital can scan him tomorrow. I don't mind making a donation to them to give him a good seeing off. I'd hope someone would extend the same courtesy if my little bugger went the same way frown

Was a bit annoyed that the person just drove off. Even if you're not a cat person, you'd think they would have at least stopped!

When one of mine got run over, someone did as you did and picked the body up, then responded to some flyers I posted. I was really grateful for the fact that they went to the effort and I knew where she had gone. I took the body to the vet and had it scanned as there was some doubt it was ours. I'm sure vet's do this all the time.

Good on you for doing the decent thing!

Phone vets tom am, take him in so they can scan him and take details. You will NOT have to pay for cremation. The vets will be obliged to keep him a week before getting him cremated.

Good on you for being so caring.

Ah cool. I will see if I can get to them tomorrow with him.

As for being caring, Just felt like he didn't deserve it. I'd be a lot happier if someone came to me if my baby was killed.

He was a big old boy though, only just fitted in a bin bag! Had a good few years behind him I reckon!

Yes indeed. I have no idea who the cat's owner may be, but I'd like to thank you on their behalf for being such a decent person.

I once saw a cat that had just been run over opposite a new housing estate; a ginger tom lying in the gutter, a couple of jerks and he was gone. I stopped and went over to look, wanting to do something but not sure what. I lifted him from the gutter and placed him on the back of the wide grass verge under the hedge, and as I was wondering what to do then, someone appeared, said they knew the owner and would take it from there.

Why does the vet have to keep the body for a week?

To give an owner a chance to find their cat. I'm not sure we have to but it's something all vets I've worked at have done, I'm not aware of any that wouldn't.

Well, a (I suppose) happy ending.

I took the little fella to the local animal hospital, explained the situation and they couldn't have been nicer. They took him in and scanned him and he is chipped.

They said they'll contact the owners and let them know and they can collect him if they want.

Suppose that's my good deed done for the day and at least the owners won't be worrying when he doesn't come home.

Well done you. Someone is in for some awful news, but at least they will know.

Much as it is heartbreaking, at least they know - I'm still mourning Bast, but if I didn't know I'd be distraught!

Exactly. Likewise - when one of mine's been missing (indoor, hiding, as it happens!) I was in bits as it was my little cat who's had a brain injury and can't go out on his own... I was on the verge of starting ringing vets when he crawled out of a space that looked so tiny that I didn't give it a second glance.

The only thing worse than having to ring round vets to try and find out what's happened to your cat, is running out of vets to ring and still not knowing where he is.

Good on you, OP. You have helped this mog's family very much by your kind actions.

There is nothing worse than losing a pet without knowing what happened. The owner will thank you.

I was out running a few years ago and saw a cat being run over. The car that did it didn't stop, but a lady did. As a cat owner I could tell it was done for (the injuries and various fluids), but it was still alive. I sent the lady off to a local vets with it, I suspect it was immediately put down, and knocked doors with the the description until I found the owner who was understandably upset.

I felt bad explaining, but I know that I would rather have known, and to understand the cat's demise.
