My Passat had the same issue. VW not interested so I paid for new wing. Following year the other side did the same but I managed to do a tidy up job.

I'm in the trade so it was not too expensive but I thought it were port of VW as it was clearly not due to chipping but under the paint.

Mine is in at the moment too, City Centre Car Care in Birmingham, 1 new wing confirmed, the other either replace or repair (awaiting confirmation). 100% warranty claim.

After an initial offer of 50% I escalated the matter. Received a call today saying VW will pick up 100% of the cost - result!

Bought a Mk5 two weeks ago and only noticed the bubbling after purchase. Brought to local dealer, Edwin Mays, who called an hour later offering 50% contribution, seems to be a common ploy of theirs. After collecting the car and a quick call to very polite and helpful Rachael at VW customer care, they contacted the dealer, some 'je ne sais quoi' happened and a couple of hours later, Edwin Mays call me up to announce that VW are now willing to cover 100% of the cost.

Seeing as the dealer would have had to initially give VW the details of the first report in order to offer me 50% contribution , I don't know what would have changed in the space of a couple of hours between the first call and the second. Chancing their arm with lower offer I would say.

Overall very happy, but they should have honoured the warranty from the start, some people wouldn't think to call the VW custom care line, I was quoted a cost of £450 if I had taken the initial 50% offer.

Now got mine back with 2 new wings and a full valet. No charge, and the loan of a brand new Polo for 10 days (why did it take 10 days - who knows?). I am very happy.

Do VW think we are stupid and will accept the first offer of 50%? Have they not heard of the internet?

They just make it up as they go along. I was offered the 50% but this came out at £200. This was before VW decided to do 100%!so I thought this was reasonable for two new wings. Got them to do the bonnet too.

Have you guys just popped into your local VW and brought this up or have you gone to a specific VW dealer with a body shop?

Does it make any difference where you bought the golf from or how many miles are on the clock?

No, those things shouldn't matter. VW Customer Care should be confirming 100% repair or replacement under goodwill on all cars.

Best bet is to take your car to a VW dealer who has their own warranty guy. He/she will take photos, paint measurements etc and refer the case to VW UK on your behalf.
If your local dealer has their own bodyshop then they will do the repair/replacement, if not then it will go to the nearest VW approved bodyshop. The one i went to did a fantastic job.

Hi Guyss,

Seeing as this was updated recently, I was wondering which dealership would be recommended in the London / Essex areas?

I have just started to see some bubbling on 1 of my front wings, and want to get it checked out as soon as possible really.

Cheers,
Faz

Noticed rust on my 2008 58 plate golf match tdi. checked out the web and saw it is a common problem on the earlier mk5s,so was shocked as mine isn't 6 years old yet. spoke to vw on twitter who took my details and the next day my local vw dealer phoned up and has booked the car in next week for an inspection.Any tips on what to say when I go in? I have never given this dealer any business before, so don't want to go in all guns blazing as I believe you get further by being nice. any help would be much appreciated.

This is what's putting me off dropping a load of money on a 57-09 plate R32..

Got a 123d at the mo and hate diesel.

Just get the fix after you buy, it means cutting the sponge to create a gap which won't scrap the inner panel.

Good news today, took my car for vw to inspect and they took a paint reading, and then phoned me one hour later to say that they will replace both wings under the warranty.

I picked up my Mk5 GTi last week and it has rust beginning to show on both arches as well as under the boot badge. It did help with negotiations a lot, just hope I can make a warranty claim!

Will keep you updated as I've found this thread extremely useful!

I have just tweeted them about both my wings and boot lid.

I will see if they reply.

Bought an 07 Edition 30 last weekend. No rust on the wings.

I'm thinking of doing the fix myself and liberally spraying the whole underside of both wings with under seal, but if for some reason rust still comes through in the future, will it void the warranty?
